to lengthen my hemlines and straightenA
my moralsB
-
because I was difficultC
-
because my parents were tiredD
-
to lock me in chastity's cupboardD
-
to Latinize me teach me mannersE
give me a good solid dose of fearF
-
to place over my fact the maskG
of stoic cheerfulnessE
-
to take away my swaggerH
tame my wild hair and rebellious tongueI
-
because that's where the doctorsE
sent their daughtersE
-
because the nuns would know what to doJ
with a girl like meK
because they would do their bestL
to pour me into the moldM
with china limbs and lace collarsE
and because they had their fingers crossedN
that I would come out niceE
like a floral centerpiece you couldO
put right into the centerH
of your dinner party gleamingP
-
as heads of cut flowersE
bobbed there grateful arrangedQ
blinking and nodding with graceE
saying yes yes turn meK
and they would turn meK
from what I wasE
into what they wantedR
-
not the wolf girlS
not soaring beast with smoking hairT
but a tame HerefordD
amiable smooth child they could loveU
with no thoughts that were devil bornV
a flat good prize of a girlS
-
and there where I lookedW
in a morning mirrorH
I would encounter myselfX
calm bovine acceptingP
-
beloved of Mother SuperiorH
cherished of God the FatherH
