Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEF GHIJFKL MNEOPQR STUVW XYZFA2

Gnarled and blessedA
be the hour of autumnB
when spotted pears sinkC
into wet sod and blessed beD
the songs of virgins risingE
into the hunchbacked treesF
-
November dawnG
Down damp stone stairsH
we followed the priestI
past leaf choked wellsJ
and jagged treesF
past the red rage of dogwoodK
ringing a black lakeL
-
Dies Irae he intonedM
Dies Illae day of wrathN
We followed his swingingE
censer trail of smokeO
schoolgirls in gray novicesP
in white veils nuns in ragged blackQ
tapping tortoise canesR
-
What joy to bear the fearS
to smell orbs of incenseT
perfuming the rot of leavesU
to cross the stubbled fieldV
as crows rushed and whirledW
-
pecking at windfall seedsX
We arrived rainsoaked awedY
to watch young nun bridesZ
kneel and spread their thin bodiesF
across green doors of gravesA2
