New Territory Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEFGHFIJFKLMFKFNO PQRFS

Sent off to boarding schoolA
at twelve with a pair of oxfordsB
a pair of patents my sterlingC
silver christening rosaryD
and two dozen name tags stitchedE
like drops of blood onto the collarsF
of starched blouses I stareG
down the hall long and dimH
slippery from too many waxingsF
Plaster statues of the holy family liveI
here in cave like niches the Blessed VirginJ
her face soft and chalky cheeksF
powdered pink Everything about herK
is pliable she is to be our modelL
Joseph is nondescript covered byM
a long brown robe The baby sleepsF
I eye the nuns black and flutteryK
and my parents in wool with fur collarsF
giddy with their new freedomN
I unpack my suitcase and surveyO
the territory One iron bedP
one chest of drawers one slender closetQ
A crucifix pierces the white wallR
A dark trunk opens its jawsF
to swallow my lifeS
