Praise the good tempered summerB
and the red cardinalC
that jumpsD
like a hot coal off the trackE
Praise the heavy leavesF
heroines of green frostedG
with silver Praise the litterB
of torn paper mulchH
and sticks the spiny hollyI
its scarlet land minesJ

Praise the black snake that whipsK
and shudders its way across my pathL
and the lane where grandmotherB
and grandfather walked armsM
around each other's waistsN
next to such a river belowO
a blue bridge about to beI
crossed by a trainP

In the last gaspQ
of August they erase the timeR
it might be now whisperingS
into the darkness that passedT
blue plumes of smoke and cicadaU
eager and doomedV
