They sat with hearts untroubledA
The clear sky sparkled aboveB
And an ancient wisdom bubbledA
From the lips of a youthful loveB
-
They read in a coloured historyC
Of Egypt and of the NileD
And half it seemed a mysteryC
Familiar half the whileD
-
Till living out of the storyC
Grew old Egyptian menE
And a shadow looked forth RoryC
And said We meet againE
-
And over Aileen a maidenF
Looked back through the ages dimG
She laughed and her eyes were ladenF
With an old time love for himG
-
In a mist came temples throngingH
With sphinxes seen in a rowI
And the rest of the day was a longingH
For their homes of long agoI
-
We'd go there if they'd let usJ
They said with wounded prideK
They never think when they pet usJ
We are old like that insideK
-
There was some one round them strayingH
The whole of the long day throughL
Who seemed to say I am playingH
At hide and seek with youL
-
And one thing after anotherM
Was whispered out of the airN
How God was a big kind brotherM
Whose home was in everywhereN
-
His light like a smile come glancingH
From the cool cool winds as they passO
From the flowers in heaven dancingH
And the stars that shine in the grassO
-
And the clouds in deep blue wreathingH
And most from the mountains tallP
But God like a wind goes breathingH
A heart light of gold in allP
-
It grows like a tree and pushesQ
Its way through the inner gloomR
And flowers in quick little rushesQ
Of love to a magic bloomR
-
And no one need sigh now or sorrowI
Whenever the heart light fliesS
For it comes again on some morrowI
And nobody ever diesS
-
The heart of the Wise was beatingH
In the children's heart that dayT
And many a thought came fleetingH
And fancies solemn and gayT
-
They were grave in a way diviningH
How childhood was taking wingsU
And the wonder world was shiningH
With vast eternal thingsU
-
The solemn twilight flutteredV
Like the plumes of seraphimR
And they felt what things were utteredV
In the sunset voice of HimR
-
They lingered long for dearerM
Than home were the mountain placesQ
Where God from the stars dropt nearerM
Their pale dreamy facesQ
-
Their very hearts from beatingH
They stilled in awed delightW
For Spirit and children were meetingH
In the purple ample nightW
-
Dusk its ash grey blossoms sheds on violet skiesS
Over twilight mountains where the heart songs riseS
Rise and fall and fade again from earth to airN
Earth renews the music sweeter Oh come thereN
Come ma cushla come as in ancient timesX
Rings aloud and the underland with faery chimesX
Down the unseen ways as strays each tinkling fleeceY
Winding ever onward to a fold of peaceY
So my dreams go straying in a land more fairN
Half I tread the dew wet grasses half wander thereN
Fade your glimmering eyes in a world grown coldZ
Come ma cushla with me to the mountain's foldZ
Where the bright ones call us waving to and froI
Come my children with me to the Ancient goI
-
OctoberM
