A dreadful forest solitude	P

With wondrous red and fairy gold	D
The clouds were woven o'er the ocean	R
The stars in fiery aether swung	S
And danced with gay and glittering motion	R

A fire leaped up within my heart	H
When first I saw the old sea shine	T
As if a god were there revealed	U
I bowed my head in awe divine	T
	-
And long beside the dim sea marge	V
I mused until the gathering haze	O
Veiled from me where the silver tide	W
Ran in its thousand shadowy ways	O

The black night dropped upon the sea	G
The silent awe came down with it	X
I saw fantastic vapours flit	X
As o'er the darkness of the pit	X
	-
When lo from out the furthest night	Y
A speck of rose and silver light	Y
Above a boat shaped wondrously	G
Came floating swiftly o'er the sea	G
	-
It was no human will that bore	Z
The boat so fleetly to the shore	Z
Without a sail spread or an oar	Z
	-
The Pilot stood erect thereon	A2
And lifted up his ancient face	B2
Ancient with glad eternal youth	C2
Like one who was of starry race	B2
	-
His face was rich with dusky bloom	D2
His eyes a bronze and golden fire	B
His hair in streams of silver light	Y
Hung flamelike on his strange attire	B

Which starred with many a mystic sign	T
Fell as o'er sunlit ruby glowing	E2
His light flew o'er the waves afar	F2
In ruddy ripples on each bar	F2
Along the spiral pathways flowing	E2

It was a crystal boat that chased	G2
The light along the watery waste	G2
Till caught amid the surges hoary	G
The Pilot stayed its jewelled glory	G

Oh never such a glory was	H2
The pale moon shot it through and through	I2
With light of lilac white and blue	I2
And there mid many a fairy hue	I2
Of pearl and pink and amethyst	J2
Like lightning ran the rainbow gleams	K2
And wove around a wonder mist	J2

The Pilot lifted beckoning hands	L2
Silent I went with deep amaze	O
To know why came this Beam of Light	Y
So far along the ocean ways	O
Out of the vast and shadowy night	Y

Make haste make haste he cried Away	L
A thousand ages now are gone	A2
Yet thou and I ere night be sped	M2
Will reck no more of eve or dawn	A2

Swift as the swallow to its nest	K
I leaped my body dropt right down	N2
A silver star I rose and flew	I2
A flame burned golden at his breast	K
I entered at the heart and knew	I2
My Brother Self who roams the deep	O2
Bird of the wonder world of sleep	O2

The ruby body wrapped us round	P2
As twain in one we left behind	Q2
The league long murmur of the shore	Z
And fleeted swifter than the wind	Q2

The distance rushed upon the bark	I
We neared unto the mystic isles	R2
The heavenly city we could mark	I
Its mountain light its jewel dark	I
Its pinnacles and starry piles	R2

The glory brightened Do not fear	S2
For we are real though what seems	K2
So proudly built above the waves	T2
Is but one mighty spirit's dreams	K2

Our Father's house hath many fanes	K2
Yet enter not and worship not	U2
For thought but follows after thought	V2
Till last consuming self it wanes	K2
	-
The Fount of Shadowy Beauty flings	K2
Its glamour o'er the light of day	L
A music in the sunlight sings	K2
To call the dreamy hearts away	L
Their mighty hopes to ease awhile	G
We will not go the way of them	E
The chant makes drowsy those who seek	W2
The sceptre and the diadem	E

The Fount of Shadowy Beauty throws	K2
Its magic round us all the night	Y
What things the heart would be it sees	K2
And chases them in endless flight	Y
Or coiled in phantom visions there	M
It builds within the halls of fire	B
Its dreams flash like the peacock's wing	E2
And glow with sun hues of desire	B
We will not follow in their ways	K2
Nor heed the lure of fay or elf	X2
But in the ending of our days	K2
Rest in the high Ancestral Self	X2

The boat of crystal touched the shore	Z
Then melted flamelike from our eyes	K2
As in the twilight drops the sun	R
Withdrawing rays of paradise	K2

We hurried under arched aisles	K2
That far above in heaven withdrawn	A2
With cloudy pillars stormed the night	Y
Rich as the opal shafts of dawn	A2
	-
I would have lingered then but he	G
Oh let us haste the dream grows dim	Y2
Another night another day	L
A thousand years will part from him	Y2
	-
Who is that Ancient One divine	T
From whom our phantom being born	Z2
Rolled with the wonder light around	P2
Had started in the fairy morn	Z2
	-
A thousand of our years to him	Y2
Are but the night are but the day	L
Wherein he rests from cyclic toil	G
Or chants the song of starry sway	L
	-
He falls asleep the Shadowy Fount	L
Fills all our heart with dreams of light	L
He wakes to ancient spheres and we	G
Through iron ages mourn the night	L
We will not wander in the night	L
But in a darkness more divine	T
Shall join the Father Light of Lights	K2
And rule the long descended line	T
	-
Even then a vasty twilight fell	G
Wavered in air the shadowy towers	K2
The city like a gleaming shell	G
Its azures opals silvers blues	K2
Were melting in more dreamy hues	K2
We feared the falling of the night	L
And hurried more our headlong flight	L
In one long line the towers went by	A3
The trembling radiance dropt behind	L
As when some swift and radiant one	R
Flits by and flings upon the wind	L
The rainbow tresses of the sun	R

And then they vanished from our gaze	K2
Faded the magic lights and all	G
Into a Starry Radiance fell	G
As waters in their fountain fall	G
	-
We knew our time long journey o'er	B
And knew the end of all desire	B
And saw within the emerald glow	G
Our Father like the white sun fire	B
	-
We could not say if age or youth	C2
Were on his face we only burned	L
To pass the gateways of the Day	L
The exiles to the heart returned	L
	-
He rose to greet us and his breath	B3
The tempest music of the spheres	K2
Dissolved the memory of earth	C3
The cyclic labour and our tears	K2
In him our dream of sorrow passed	L
The spirit once again was free	G
And heard the song the Morning Stars	K2
Chant in eternal revelry	G

This was the close of human story	G
We saw the deep unmeasured shine	T
And sank within the mystic glory	G
They called of old the Dark Divine	T
	-
Well it is gone now	D3
The dream that I chanted	L
On this side the dawn now	D3
I sit fate implanted	L
	-
But though of my dreaming	E2
The dawn has bereft me	G
It all was not seeming	E2
For something has left me	G

I fell in some other	B
World far from this cold light	L
The Dream Bird my brother	B
Is rayed with the gold light	L

I too in the Father	B
Would hide me and so	G
Bright Bird to foregather	B
