I would I could weave inA
The colour the wonderB
The song I conceive inA
My heart while I ponderB
-
And show how it came likeC
The magi of oldD
Whose chant was a flame likeC
The dawn's voice of goldD
-
Who dreams followed near themE
A murmur of birdsF
And ear still could hear themE
Unchanted in wordsF
-
In words I can onlyG
Reveal thee my heartH
Oh Light of the LonelyG
The shining impartH
-
Between the twilight and the darkI
The lights danced up before my eyesJ
I found no sleep or peace or restK
But dreams of stars and burning skiesJ
-
I knew the faces of the dayL
Dream faces pale with cloudy hairM
I know you not nor yet your homeN
The Fount of Shadowy Beauty whereM
-
I passed a dream of gloomy waysO
Where ne'er did human feet intrudeP
It was the border of a woodQ
A dreadful forest solitudeP
-
With wondrous red and fairy goldD
The clouds were woven o'er the oceanR
The stars in fiery aether swungS
And danced with gay and glittering motionR
-
A fire leaped up within my heartH
When first I saw the old sea shineT
As if a god were there revealedU
I bowed my head in awe divineT
-
And long beside the dim sea margeV
I mused until the gathering hazeO
Veiled from me where the silver tideW
Ran in its thousand shadowy waysO
-
The black night dropped upon the seaG
The silent awe came down with itX
I saw fantastic vapours flitX
As o'er the darkness of the pitX
-
When lo from out the furthest nightY
A speck of rose and silver lightY
Above a boat shaped wondrouslyG
Came floating swiftly o'er the seaG
-
It was no human will that boreZ
The boat so fleetly to the shoreZ
Without a sail spread or an oarZ
-
The Pilot stood erect thereonA2
And lifted up his ancient faceB2
Ancient with glad eternal youthC2
Like one who was of starry raceB2
-
His face was rich with dusky bloomD2
His eyes a bronze and golden fireB
His hair in streams of silver lightY
Hung flamelike on his strange attireB
-
Which starred with many a mystic signT
Fell as o'er sunlit ruby glowingE2
His light flew o'er the waves afarF2
In ruddy ripples on each barF2
Along the spiral pathways flowingE2
-
It was a crystal boat that chasedG2
The light along the watery wasteG2
Till caught amid the surges hoaryG
The Pilot stayed its jewelled gloryG
-
Oh never such a glory wasH2
The pale moon shot it through and throughI2
With light of lilac white and blueI2
And there mid many a fairy hueI2
Of pearl and pink and amethystJ2
Like lightning ran the rainbow gleamsK2
And wove around a wonder mistJ2
-
The Pilot lifted beckoning handsL2
Silent I went with deep amazeO
To know why came this Beam of LightY
So far along the ocean waysO
Out of the vast and shadowy nightY
-
Make haste make haste he cried AwayL
A thousand ages now are goneA2
Yet thou and I ere night be spedM2
Will reck no more of eve or dawnA2
-
Swift as the swallow to its nestK
I leaped my body dropt right downN2
A silver star I rose and flewI2
A flame burned golden at his breastK
I entered at the heart and knewI2
My Brother Self who roams the deepO2
Bird of the wonder world of sleepO2
-
The ruby body wrapped us roundP2
As twain in one we left behindQ2
The league long murmur of the shoreZ
And fleeted swifter than the windQ2
-
The distance rushed upon the barkI
We neared unto the mystic islesR2
The heavenly city we could markI
Its mountain light its jewel darkI
Its pinnacles and starry pilesR2
-
The glory brightened Do not fearS2
For we are real though what seemsK2
So proudly built above the wavesT2
Is but one mighty spirit's dreamsK2
-
Our Father's house hath many fanesK2
Yet enter not and worship notU2
For thought but follows after thoughtV2
Till last consuming self it wanesK2
-
The Fount of Shadowy Beauty flingsK2
Its glamour o'er the light of dayL
A music in the sunlight singsK2
To call the dreamy hearts awayL
Their mighty hopes to ease awhileG
We will not go the way of themE
The chant makes drowsy those who seekW2
The sceptre and the diademE
-
The Fount of Shadowy Beauty throwsK2
Its magic round us all the nightY
What things the heart would be it seesK2
And chases them in endless flightY
Or coiled in phantom visions thereM
It builds within the halls of fireB
Its dreams flash like the peacock's wingE2
And glow with sun hues of desireB
We will not follow in their waysK2
Nor heed the lure of fay or elfX2
But in the ending of our daysK2
Rest in the high Ancestral SelfX2
-
The boat of crystal touched the shoreZ
Then melted flamelike from our eyesK2
As in the twilight drops the sunR
Withdrawing rays of paradiseK2
-
We hurried under arched aislesK2
That far above in heaven withdrawnA2
With cloudy pillars stormed the nightY
Rich as the opal shafts of dawnA2
-
I would have lingered then but heG
Oh let us haste the dream grows dimY2
Another night another dayL
A thousand years will part from himY2
-
Who is that Ancient One divineT
From whom our phantom being bornZ2
Rolled with the wonder light aroundP2
Had started in the fairy mornZ2
-
A thousand of our years to himY2
Are but the night are but the dayL
Wherein he rests from cyclic toilG
Or chants the song of starry swayL
-
He falls asleep the Shadowy FountL
Fills all our heart with dreams of lightL
He wakes to ancient spheres and weG
Through iron ages mourn the nightL
We will not wander in the nightL
But in a darkness more divineT
Shall join the Father Light of LightsK2
And rule the long descended lineT
-
Even then a vasty twilight fellG
Wavered in air the shadowy towersK2
The city like a gleaming shellG
Its azures opals silvers bluesK2
Were melting in more dreamy huesK2
We feared the falling of the nightL
And hurried more our headlong flightL
In one long line the towers went byA3
The trembling radiance dropt behindL
As when some swift and radiant oneR
Flits by and flings upon the windL
The rainbow tresses of the sunR
-
And then they vanished from our gazeK2
Faded the magic lights and allG
Into a Starry Radiance fellG
As waters in their fountain fallG
-
We knew our time long journey o'erB
And knew the end of all desireB
And saw within the emerald glowG
Our Father like the white sun fireB
-
We could not say if age or youthC2
Were on his face we only burnedL
To pass the gateways of the DayL
The exiles to the heart returnedL
-
He rose to greet us and his breathB3
The tempest music of the spheresK2
Dissolved the memory of earthC3
The cyclic labour and our tearsK2
In him our dream of sorrow passedL
The spirit once again was freeG
And heard the song the Morning StarsK2
Chant in eternal revelryG
-
This was the close of human storyG
We saw the deep unmeasured shineT
And sank within the mystic gloryG
They called of old the Dark DivineT
-
Well it is gone nowD3
The dream that I chantedL
On this side the dawn nowD3
I sit fate implantedL
-
But though of my dreamingE2
The dawn has bereft meG
It all was not seemingE2
For something has left meG
-
I fell in some otherB
World far from this cold lightL
The Dream Bird my brotherB
Is rayed with the gold lightL
-
I too in the FatherB
Would hide me and soG
Bright Bird to foregatherB
With thee now I goG
-
DecemberB
