The children awoke in their dreamingA
While earth lay dewy and stillB
They followed the rill in its gleamingA
To the heart light of the hillB
-
Its sounds and sights were forsakingA
The world as they faded in sleepC
When they heard a music breakingA
Out from the heart light deepC
-
It ran where the rill in its flowingA
Under the star light gayD
With wonderful colour was glowingA
Like the bubbles they blew in their playD
-
From the misty mountain underE
Shot gleams of an opal starF
Its pathways of rainbow wonderE
Rayed to their feet from afarF
-
From their feet as they strayed in the meadowG
It led through caverned aislesH
Filled with purple and green light and shadowG
For mystic miles on milesH
-
The children were glad it was lonelyI
To play on the hill side by dayD
But now they said we have onlyI
To go where the good people strayD
-
For all the hill side was hauntedJ
By the faery folk come againK
And down in the heart light enchantedL
Were opal coloured menK
-
They moved like kings unattendedL
Without a squire or dameM
But they wore tiaras splendidJ
With feathers of starlight flameM
-
They laughed at the children overE
And called them into the heartN
Come down here each sleepless roverE
We will show you some of our artN
-
And down through the cool of the mountainO
The children sank at the callP
And stood in a blazing fountainO
And never a mountain at allP
-
The lights were coming and goingA
In many a shining strandQ
For the opal fire kings were blowingA
The darkness out of the landQ
-
This golden breath was a madnessR
To set a poet on fireE
And this was a cure for sadnessR
And that the ease of desireE
-
And all night long over EriE
They fought with the wand of lightS
And love that never grew wearyE
The evil things of nightS
-
They said as dawn glimmered hoaryE
We will show yourselves for an hourE
And the children were changed to a gloryE
By the beautiful magic of powerE
-
The fire kings smiled on their facesT
And called them by olden namesU
Till they towered like the starry racesT
All plumed with the twilight flamesU
-
They talked for a while togetherE
How the toil of ages oppressedV
And of how they best could weatherE
The ship of the world to its restV
-
The dawn in the room was strayingA
The children began to blinkW
When they heard a far voice sayingA
You can grow like that if you thinkW
-
The sun came in yellow and gay lightS
They tumbled out of the cotX
And half of the dream went with daylightS
And half was never forgotX
