St John iA
-
-
In the mighty Mother's bosom was the WiseB
With the mystic Father in aeonian nightC
Aye for ever one with them though it ariseB
Going forth to sound its hymn of lightC
-
At its incantation rose the starry faneD
At its magic thronged the myriad race of menE
Life awoke that in the womb so long had lainD
To its cyclic labours once againE
-
'Tis the soul of fire within the heart of lifeF
From its fiery fountain spring the will and thoughtG
All the strength of man for deeds of love or strifeF
Though the darkness comprehend it notH
-
In the mystery written hereI
John is but the life the seerI
Outcast from the life of lightC
Inly with reverted sightC
Still he scans with eager eyesB
The celestial mysteriesJ
Poet of all far seen thingsK
At his word the soul has wingsK
Revelations symbols dreamsL
Of the inmost light which gleamsL
-
The winds the stars and the skies though wroughtG
By the one Fire Self still know it notH
And man who moves in the twilight dimM
Feels not the love that encircles himM
Though in heart on bosom and eyelids pressN
Lips of an infinite tendernessO
He turns away through the dark to roamP
Nor heeds the fire in his hearth and homeP
-
They whose wisdom everywhereQ
Sees as through a crystal airQ
The lamp by which the world is litR
And themselves as one with itR
In whom the eye of vision swellsS
Who have in entranced hoursT
Caught the word whose might compelsS
All the elemental powersT
They arise as Gods from menE
Like the morning stars againE
They who seek the place of restU
Quench the blood heat of the breastU
Grow ascetic inward turningV
Trample down the lust from burningV
Silence in the self the willW
For a power diviner stillW
To the fire born Self aloneX
The ancestral spheres are knownX
-
Unto the poor dead shadows cameY
Wisdom mantled about with flameY
We had eyes that could see the lightC
Born of the mystic Father's mightC
Glory radiant with powers untoldZ
And the breath of God around it rolledZ
-
Life that moved in the deeps belowA2
Felt the fire in its bosom glowA2
Life awoke with the Light alliedB2
Grew divinely stirred and criedB2
This is the Ancient of Days withinC2
Light that is ere our days beginC2
-
Every power in the spirit's kenE
Springs anew in our lives againE
We had but dreams of the heart's desireD2
Beauty thrilled with the mystic fireD2
The white fire breath whence springs the powerD2
Flows alone in the spirit's hourD2
-
Man arose the earth he trodE2
Grew divine as he gazed on GodE2
Light in a fiery whirlwind brokeF2
Out of the dark divine and spokeF2
Man went forth through the vast to treadG2
By the spirit of wisdom chariotedG2
-
There came the learned of the schoolsH2
Who measure heavenly things by rulesH2
The sceptic doubter the logicianI2
Who in all sacred things precisionI2
Would mark the limit fix the scopeJ2
Art thou the Christ for whom we hopeJ2
Art thou a magian or in theeK2
Has the divine eye power to seeK2
He answered low to those who cameY
Not this nor this nor this I claimY
More than the yearning of the heartG2
I have no wisdom to impartG2
I am the voice that cries in himM
Whose heart is dead whose eyes are dimM
'Make pure the paths where through may runI2
The light streams from that golden oneI2
The Self who lives within the sun '-
As spake the seer of ancient daysL2
The voices from the earthly waysL2
Questioned him still What dost thou hereI
If neither prophet king nor seerI
What power is kindled by they mightG2
I flow before the feet of LightG2
I am the purifying streamM2
But One of whom ye have no dreamM2
Whose footsteps move among you stillW
Though dark divine invisibleN2
Impelled by Him before His waysL2
I journey though I dare not raiseL2
Even from the ground these eyes so dimM
Or look upon the feet of HimM
-
When the dead or dreamy hoursT
Like a mantle fall awayO2
Wakes the eye of gnostic powersT
To the light of hidden dayO2
-
And the yearning heart withinC2
Seeks the true the only friendG2
He who burdened with our sinC2
Loves and loves unto the endG2
-
Ah the martyr of the worldG2
With a face of steadfast peaceP2
Round whose brow the light is curledG2
'Tis the Lamb with golden fleeceP2
-
So they called of old the shiningV
Such a face the sons of menE
See and all its life diviningV
Wake primeval fires againE
-
Such a face and such a gloryK2
Passed before the eyes of JohnQ2
With a breath of olden storyK2
Blown from ages long agoneQ2
-
Who would know the God in manQ2
Deeper still must be his glanceR2
Veil on veil his eye must scanQ2
For the mystic signs which tellS2
If the fire electric fellS2
On the seer in his tranceR2
As his way he upward wingsK
From all time encircled thingsK
Flames the glory round his headG2
Like a bird with wings outspreadG2
Gold and silver plumes at restG2
Such a shadowy shining crestG2
Round the hero's head reveals himM
To the soul that would adoreT2
As the master power that heals himM
And the fount of secret loreT2
Nature such a diademU2
Places on her royal lineQ2
Every eye that looks on themU2
Knows the Sons of the DivineQ2
