He bent above so still her breathA
What air she breathed he could not sayB
Whether in worlds of life or deathA
So softly ebbed away awayB
The life that had been light to himC
So fled her beauty leaving dimC
The emptying chambers of his heartD
Thrilled only by the pang and smartD
The dull and throbbing agonyE
That suffers still yet knows not whyF
Love's immortality so blindG
Dreams that all things with it conjoinedH
Must share with it immortal dayB
But not of this but not of thisI
The touch the eyes the laugh the kissI
Fall from it and it goes its wayB
So blind he wept above her clayB
'I did not think that you could dieF
Only some veil would cover youJ
Our loving eyes could still pierce throughJ
And see through dusky shadows stillK
Move as of old your wild sweet willK
Impatient every heart to winL
And flash its heavenly radiance in 'M
Though all the worlds were sunk in restN
The ruddy star within his breastN
Would croon its tale of ancient painO
Its sorrow that would never waneO
Its memory of the days of yoreP
Moulded in beauty evermoreP
Ah immortality so blindG
To dream all things with it conjoinedH
Must follow it from star to starQ
And share with it immortal yearsR
The memory yearning grief and tearsS
Fall from it and it goes afarQ
He walked at night along the sandsT
And saw the stars dance overheadU
He had no memory of the deadU
But lifted up exultant handsT
To hail the future like a boyV
The myriad paths his feet might pressW
Unhaunted by old tendernessX
He felt an inner secret joyV
A spirit of unfettered willK
Through light and darkness moving stillK
Within the All to find its ownY
To be immortal and aloneY
