About Yule when the wind blew coolA
And the round tables beganB
A' there is come to our king's courtC
Mony a well favoured manB
-
The queen looked o'er the castle wa'D
Beheld baith dale and downE
And then she saw young WatersF
Come riding to the townE
-
His footmen they did rin beforeG
His horsemen rade behindH
Ane mantle of the burning gowdH
Did keep him frae the windH
-
Gowden graith'd his horse beforeG
And siller shod behindH
The horse young Waters rade uponI
Was fleeter than the windH
-
Out then spake a wily lordH
Unto the queen said heJ
O tell me wha's the fairest faceK
Rides in the companyJ
-
I've seen lord and I've seen lairdH
And knights of high degreeJ
But a fairer face than young WatersF
Mine eyen did never seeJ
-
Out then spake the jealous kingL
And an angry man was heJ
O if he had been twice as fairM
You might have excepted meJ
-
You're neither laird nor lord she saysN
But the king that wears the crownE
There is not a knight in fair ScotlandH
But to thee maun bow downE
-
For a' that she could do or sayO
Appeased he wad nae beJ
But for the words which she had saidH
Young Waters he maun deeJ
-
They hae ta'en young WatersF
And put fetters to his feetH
They hae ta'en young WatersF
And thrown him in dungeon deepP
-
Aft I have ridden thro' Stirling townE
In the wind but and the weetH
But I ne'er rade thro' Stirling townE
Wi' fetters at my feetH
-
Aft have I ridden thro' Stirling townE
In the wind but and the rainQ
But I ne'er rade thro' Stirling townE
Ne'er to return againR
-
They hae ta'en to the heading hillS
His young son in his cradleT
And they hae ta'en to the heading hillS
His horse but and his saddleT
-
They hae ta'en to the heading hillS
His lady fair to seeJ
And for the words the queen had spokeU
Young Waters he did deeJ
