To yon fause stream that near the seaA
Hides mony an elf and plumB
And rives wi' fearful din the stanesA
A witless knicht did comeB
-
The day shines clear far in he's ganeC
Whar shells are silver brightD
Fishes war loupin' a' aroun'C
And sparklin' to the lightD
-
Whan as he laved sounds cam sae sweetE
Frae ilka rock an' treeA
The brief was out 'twas him it doomedF
The mermaid's face to seeA
-
Frae 'neath a rock sune sune she roseA
And stately on she swamG
Stopped i' the midst and becked and sangH
To him to stretch his han'C
-
Gowden glist the yellow linksA
That round her neck she'd twineC
Her een war o' the skyie blueI
Her lips did mock the wineC
-
The smile upon her bonnie cheekJ
Was sweeter than the beeA
Her voice excelled the birdie's sangH
Upon the birchen treeA
-
Sae couthie couthie did she lookK
And meikle had she fleechedF
Out shot his hand alas alasA
Fast in the swirl he screechedF
-
The mermaid leuch her brief was ganeC
And kelpie's blast was blawin'C
Fu' low she duked ne'er raise againC
For deep deep was the fawin'C
-
Aboon the stream his wraith was seenC
Warlochs tirled lang at gloamin'C
That e'en was coarse the blast blew hoarseA
Ere lang the waves war foamin'C
