A fair maid sat in her bower doorA
Wringing her lily handsB
And by it came a sprightly youthC
Fast tripping o'er the strandsB
-
Where gang ye young John she saysD
Sae early in the dayE
It gars me think by your fast tripF
Your journey's far awayE
-
He turn'd about wi' surly lookG
And said What's that to theeH
I'm ga'en to see a lovely maidI
Mair fairer far than yeH
-
Now hae ye play'd me this fause loveJ
In simmer 'mid the flowersK
I shall repay ye back againL
In winter 'mid the showersK
-
But again dear love and again dear loveJ
Will ye not turn againL
For as ye look to ither womenM
I shall do to other menL
-
Make your choice o' whom you pleaseN
For I my choice will haveO
I've chosen a maid more fair than theeH
I never will deceiveP
-
But she's kilt up her claithing fineQ
And after him gaed sheH
But aye he said Ye'll turn againL
Nae farder gae wi' meH
-
But again dear love and again dear loveJ
Will ye never love me againL
Alas for loving you sae wellR
And you na me againL
-
The firstan' town that they came tillS
He bought her brooch and ringT
But aye he bade her turn againL
And gang nae farder wi' himU
-
But again dear love and again dear love etcV
-
The nextan' town that they came tillS
He bought her muff and glovesW
But aye he bade her turn againL
And choose some other lovesW
-
But again dear love and again dear love etcV
-
The nextan' town that they came tillS
His heart it grew mair fainX
And he was deep in love wi' herY
As she was ower againL
-
The nextan' town that they came tillS
He bought her wedding gownZ
And made her lady o' ha's and bowersK
In sweet Berwick townZ
