Rise up rise up now Lord Douglas she saysA
And put on your armour so brightB
Sweet William will hae Lady Margaret awi'C
Before that it be lightB
-
Rise up rise up my seven bold sonsD
And put on your armour so brightB
And take better care of your youngest sisterE
For your eldest's awa' the last nightB
-
He's mounted her on a milk white steedF
And himself on a dapple greyG
With a buglet horn hung down by his sideH
And lightly they rode awayG
-
Lord William lookit o'er his left shoulderE
To see what he could seeI
And there he spied her seven brethren boldJ
Come riding o'er the leaI
-
Light down light down Lady Margaret he saidK
And hold my steed in your handL
Until that against your seven brethren boldJ
And your father I make a standL
-
She held his steed in her milk white handL
And never shed one tearM
Until that she saw her seven brethren fa'N
And her father hard fighting who loved her so dearO
-
O hold your hand Lord William she saidK
For your strokes they are wondrous sairO
True lovers I can get many a aneP
But a father I can never get mairO
-
O she's ta'en out her handkerchiefN
It was o' the holland sae fineQ
And aye she dighted her father's bloody woundsR
That were redder than the wineQ
-
O chuse O chuse Lady Margaret he saidK
O whether will ye gang or bideH
I'll gang I'll gang Lord William she saidK
For you have left me nae other guideH
-
He's lifted her on a milk white steedF
And himself on a dapple greyO
With a buglet horn hung down by his sideH
And slowly they baith rade awayO
-
O they rade on and on they radeH
And a' by the light of the moonS
Until they came to yon wan waterO
And there they lighted downT
-
They lighted down to tak a drinkU
Of the spring that ran sae clearO
And down the stream ran his gude heart's bloodH
And sair she 'gan to fearO
-
Hold up hold up Lord William she saysA
For I fear that you are slainP
'Tis naething but the shadow of my scarlet cloakV
That shines in the water sae plainP
-
O they rade on and on they radeH
And a' by the light of the moonS
Until they came to his mother's ha' doorO
And there they lighted downT
-
Get up get up lady mother he saysA
Get up and let me inW
Get up get up lady mother he saysA
For this night my fair lady I've winW
-
O mak my bed lady mother he saysA
O mak it braid and deepX
And lay Lady Margaret close at my backY
And the sounder I will sleepX
-
Lord William was dead lang ere midnightH
Lady Margaret lang ere dayH
And all true lovers that go thegitherO
May they have mair luck than theyH
-
Lord William was buried in St Marie's kirkZ
Lady Margaret in Marie's quireO
Out o' the lady's grave grew a bonny red roseA2
And out o' the knight's a brierO
-
And they twa met and they twa platH
And fain they wad be nearO
And a' the world might ken right weelI
They were twa lovers dearO
-
But bye and rade the black DouglasB2
And wow but he was roughN
For he pulled up the bonny brierO
And flanged in St Marie's LochC2
