Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEFE DEGE HEIE JEKE BELE BEKE BEKE MEGE MENE OEDE PEHE QECE QERE SEBE TEUE QEDE QEFE JEBE

Late at e'en drinking the wineA
And ere they paid the lawingB
They set a combat them betweenC
To fight it in the dawingB
-
What though ye be my sister's lordD
We'll cross our swords to morrowE
What though my wife your sister beF
I'll meet ye then on YarrowE
-
O stay at hame my ain gude lordD
O stay my ain dear marrowE
My cruel brither will you betrayG
On the dowie banks o' YarrowE
-
O fare ye weel my lady dearH
And put aside your sorrowE
For if I gae I'll sune returnI
Frae the bonny banks o' YarrowE
-
She kiss'd his cheek she kaim'd his hairJ
As oft she'd done before OE
She belted him wi' his gude brandK
And he's awa' to YarrowE
-
When he gaed up the Tennies bankB
As he gaed mony a morrowE
Nine armed men lay in a denL
On the dowie braes o' YarrowE
-
O come ye here to hunt or hawkB
The bonny Forest thoroughE
Or come ye here to wield your brandK
Upon the banks o' YarrowE
-
I come not here to hunt or hawkB
As oft I've dune before OE
But I come here to wield my brandK
Upon the banks o' YarrowE
-
If ye attack me nine to aneM
Then may God send ye sorrowE
Yet will I fight while stand I mayG
On the bonny banks o' YarrowE
-
Two has he hurt and three has slainM
On the bloody braes o' YarrowE
But the stubborn knight crept in behindN
And pierced his body thoroughE
-
Gae hame gae hame you brither JohnO
And tell your sister sorrowE
To come and lift her leafu' lordD
On the dowie banks o' YarrowE
-
Her brither John gaed ower yon hillP
As oft he'd dune before OE
There he met his sister dearH
Cam' rinnin' fast to YarrowE
-
I dreamt a dream last night she saysQ
I wish it binna sorrowE
I dreamt I pu'd the heather greenC
Wi' my true love on YarrowE
-
I'll read your dream sister he saysQ
I'll read it into sorrowE
Ye're bidden go take up your loveR
He's sleeping sound on YarrowE
-
She's torn the ribbons frae her headS
That were baith braid and narrowE
She's kilted up her lang claithingB
And she's awa' to YarrowE
-
She's ta'en him in her arms twaT
And gi'en him kisses thoroughE
She sought to bind his mony woundsU
But he lay dead on YarrowE
-
O haud your tongue her father saysQ
And let be a' your sorrowE
I'll wed you to a better lordD
Than him ye lost on YarrowE
-
O haud your tongue father she saysQ
Far warse ye mak' my sorrowE
A better lord could never beF
Than him that lies on YarrowE
-
She kiss'd his lips she kaim'd his hairJ
As aft she had dune before OE
And there wi' grief her heart did breakB
Upon the banks o' YarrowE
