There was a youthe and a well beloved youtheA
And he was a squire's sonB
He loved the bayliffe's daughter deareC
That lived in IslingtonB
-
Yet she was coye and would not believeD
That he did love her soeE
Noe nor at any time would sheF
Any countenance to him showeG
-
But when his friendes did understandH
His fond and foolish mindeH
They sent him up to faire LondonB
An apprentice for to bindeH
-
And when he had been seven long yearesE
And never his love could seeE
Many a teare have I shed for her sakeI
When she little thought of meeE
-
Then all the maids of IslingtonB
Went forth to sport and playeJ
All but the bayliffe's daughter deareC
She secretly stole awayeJ
-
She pulled off her gowne of greeneB
And put on ragged attireC
And to faire London she would goK
Her true love to enquireC
-
And as she went along the high roadH
The weather being hot and dryeJ
She sat her downe upon a green bankL
And her true love came riding byeJ
-
She started up with a colour soe reddH
Catching hold of his bridle reineB
One penny one penny kind sir she saydH
Will ease me of much paineB
-
Before I give you one penny sweet heartH
Praye tell me where you were borneB
At Islington kind sir sayd sheeF
Where I have had many a scorneB
-
I prythee sweet heart then tell to meeE
O tell me whether you knoweG
The bayliffes daughter of IslingtonB
She is dead sir long agoeL
-
If she be dead then take my horseE
My saddle and bridle alsoK
For I will into some farr countryeJ
Where noe man shall me knoweG
-
O staye O staye thou goodlye youtheA
She standeth by thy sideH
She is here alive she is not deadH
And readye to be thy brideH
-
O farewell griefe and welcome joyeJ
Ten thousand times thereforeC
For nowe I have founde mine owne true loveM
Whom I thought I should never see moreC
