When Robin Hood and Little JohnA
Down a down a down a downB
Went o'er yon bank of broomC
Said Robin Hood to Little JohnA
We have shot for many a poundD
Hey down a down a downB
-
But I am not able to shoot one shot moreE
My arrows will not fleeF
But I have a cousin lives down belowG
Please God she will bleed meF
-
Now Robin is to fair Kirkley goneH
As fast as he can winI
But before he came there as we do hearJ
He was taken very illK
-
And when that he came to fair Kirkley hallL
He knocked all at the ringM
But none was so ready as his cousin herselfN
For to let bold Robin inI
-
Will you please to sit down cousin Robin she saidO
And drink some beer with meF
No I will neither eat nor drinkP
Till I am blooded by theeF
-
Well I have a room cousin Robin she saidO
Which you did never seeF
And if you please to walk thereinI
You blooded by me shall beF
-
She took him by the lily white handQ
And led him to a private roomC
And there she blooded bold Robin HoodR
Whilst one drop of blood would runS
-
She blooded him in the vein of the armT
And locked him up in the roomC
There did he bleed all the live long dayU
Until the next day at noonV
-
He then bethought him of a casement doorE
Thinking for to begoneV
He was so weak he could not leapW
Nor he could not get downV
-
He then bethought him of his bugle hornV
Which hung low down to his kneeV
He set his horn unto his mouthX
And blew out weak blasts threeV
-
Then Little John when hearing himY
As he sat under the treeV
I fear my master is near deadO
He blows so wearilyV
-
Then Little John to Fair Kirkley is goneV
As fast as he can dreeV
But when he came to Kirkley hallL
He broke locks two or threeV
-
Until he came bold Robin toZ
Then he fell on his kneeV
A boon a boon cries Little JohnV
Master I beg of theeV
-
What is that boon quoth Robin HoodR
Little John thou begst of meV
It is to burn fair Kirkley hallL
And all their nunneryV
-
Now nay now nay quoth Robin HoodR
That boon I'll not grant theeV
I never hurt woman in all my lifeA2
Nor man in woman's companyV
-
I never hurt fair maid in all my timeB2
Nor at my end shall it beV
But give me my bent bow in my handQ
And a broad arrow I'll let fleeV
And where this arrow is taken upC2
There shall my grave digged beV
-
Lay me a green sod under my headO
And another under my feetD2
And lay my bent bow by my sideE2
Which was my music sweetD2
And make my grave of gravel and greenV
Which is most right and meetD2
-
Let me have length and breadth enoughF2
With a green sod under my headO
That they may say when I am deadO
Here lies bold Robin HoodR
-
These words they readily promised himY
Which did bold Robin pleaseG2
And there they buried bold Robin HoodR
Near to the fair KirkleysG2
