Come listen to me you gallants so freeA
All you that love mirth for to hearB
And I will tell you of a bold outlawC
That lived in NottinghamshireB
-
As Robin Hood in the forest stoodD
All under the greenwood treeB
There he was aware of a brave young manE
As fine as fine might beB
-
The youngster was clad in scarlet redF
In scarlet fine and gayG
And he did frisk it over the plainH
And chaunted a roundelayC
-
As Robin Hood next morning stoodD
Amongst the leaves so gayG
There did he espy the same young manE
Come drooping along the wayG
-
The scarlet he wore the day beforeB
It was clean cast awayG
And at every step he fetched a sighI
Alas and a well a dayG
-
Then stepped forth brave Little JohnJ
And Midge the miller's sonK
Which made the young man bend his bowL
When as he see them comeM
-
Stand off stand off the young man saidF
What is your will with meB
You must come before our master straightN
Under yon greenwood treeB
-
And when he came bold Robin beforeB
Robin asked him courteouslyC
O hast thou any money to spareB
For my merry men and meB
-
I have no money the young man saidF
But five shillings and a ringO
And that I have kept this seven long yearsP
To have at my weddingO
-
Yesterday I should have married a maidQ
But she was from me ta'enR
And chosen to be an old knight's delightS
Whereby my poor heart is slainH
-
What is thy name then said Robin HoodD
Come tell me without any failC
By the faith of my body then said the young manE
My name it is Allen a DaleC
-
What wilt thou give me said Robin HoodD
In ready gold or feeB
To help thee to thy true love againR
And deliver her unto theeB
-
I have no money then quoth the young manE
No ready gold nor feeB
But I will swear upon a bookT
Thy true servant for to beB
-
How many miles is it to thy true loveU
Come tell me without guileC
By the faith of my body then said the young manE
It is but five little mileC
-
Then Robin he hasted over the plainH
He did neither stint nor linV
Until he came unto the churchW
Where Allen should keep his weddin'V
-
What hast thou here the bishop then saidF
I prithee now tell unto meB
I am a bold harper quoth Robin HoodD
And the best in the north countryB
-
O welcome O welcome the bishop he saidF
That music best pleaseth meB
You shall have no music quoth Robin HoodD
Till the bride and bridegroom I seeB
-
With that came in a wealthy knightS
Which was both grave and oldX
And after him a finikin lassY
Did shine like the glistering goldX
-
This is not a fit match quoth Robin HoodD
That you do seem to make hereB
For since we are come into the churchW
The bride shall chuse her own dearB
-
Then Robin Hood put his horn to his mouthZ
And blew blasts two and threeB
When four and twenty bowmen boldX
Came leaping over the leaB
-
And when they came into the church yardA2
Marching all in a rowB
The first man was Allen a DaleC
To give bold Robin his bowL
-
This is thy true love Robin he saidF
Young Allen as I hear sayG
And you shall be married this same timeB2
Before we depart awayG
-
That shall not be the bishop he criedC2
For thy word shall not standD2
They shall be three times asked in the churchW
As the law is of our landD2
-
Robin Hood pulled off the bishop's coatE2
And put it upon Little JohnV
By the faith of my body then Robin saidF
This cloth doth make thee a manV
-
When Little John went into the quireB
The people began to laughF2
He asked them seven times into churchW
Lest three times should not be enoughG2
-
Who gives me this maid said Little JohnV
Quoth Robin Hood That do II
And he that takes her from Allen a DaleC
Full dearly he shall her buyI
-
And then having ended this merry weddingO
The bride looked like a queenV
And so they returned to the merry greenwoodD
Amongst the leaves so greenV
