Annan Water's wading deepA
And my love Annie's wondrous bonnyB
I will keep my tryst to nightC
And win the heart o' lovely AnnieB
-
He's loupen on his bonny greyD
He rade the right gate and the ready'C
For a' the storm he wadna stayC
For seeking o' his bonny ladyC
-
And he has ridden o'er field and fellE
Through muir and moss and stones and mireF
His spurs o' steel were sair to bideC
And frae her four feet flew the fireG
-
My bonny grey noo play your partC
Gin ye be the steed that wins my dearieG
Wi' corn and hay ye'se be fed for ayeH
And never spur sail mak' you wearieG
-
The grey was a mare and a right gude mareG
But when she wan the Annan WaterG
She couldna hae found the ford that nightC
Had a thousand merks been wadded at herG
-
O boatman boatman put off your boatC
Put off your boat for gouden moneyC
But for a' the goud in fair ScotlandC
He dared na tak' him through to AnnieC
-
O I was sworn sae late yestreenC
Not by a single aith but monyC
I'll cross the drumly stream to nightC
Or never could I face my honeyC
-
The side was stey and the bottom deepA
Frae bank to brae the water pouringI
The bonny grey mare she swat for fearG
For she heard the water kelpy roaringI
-
He spurred her forth into the floodC
I wot she swam both strong and steadyC
But the stream was broad her strength did failJ
And he never saw his bonny ladyC
-
O wae betide the frush saugh wandC
And wae betide the bush of brierG
That bent and brake into his handC
When strength of man and horse did tireG
-
And wae betide ye Annan WaterG
This night ye are a drumly riverG
But over thee we'll build a brigK
That ye nae mair true love may severG
