Thy hands are like cool herbs that bringA
Balm to men's hearts upon them laidB
Thy lovely petalled lips are madeB
As any blossom of the springA
But in thine eyes there is a thingA
O Love that makes me half afraidB
-
For they are old those eyes They gleamC
Between the waking and the dreamC
With antique wisdom like a brightD
Lamp strangled by the temple's veilE
That beckons to the acolyteD
Who prays with trembling lips and paleE
In the long watches of the nightD
-
They are as old as Life They wereF
When proud Gomorrah reared its headG
A new born city They were thereH
When in the places of the deadG
Men swathed the body of the LordI
They visioned Pa wak raise the wallJ
Of China They saw Carthage fallJ
And marked the grim Hun lead his hordeI
-
There is no secret anywhereH
Nor any joy or shame that liesK
Not writ somehow in those child eyesK
Of thine O Love in some strange wiseK
Thou art the lad EndymionL
And that great queen with spice and myrrhF
From Araby whom SolomonL
Delighted and the lust of herF
-
The legions marching from the seaM
With C sar's cohorts sang of theeM
How thy fair head was more to himN
Than all the land of ItalyM
Yea in the old days thou wast sheM
Who lured Mark Antony from homeO
To death and Egypt seeing heM
Lost love when he lost RomeO
-
Thou saw'st old Tubal strike the lyreP
Yea first for thee the poet hurledQ
Defiance at God's starry choirF
Thou art the romance and the fireF
Thou art the pageant and the strifeR
The clamour mounting high and higherF
From all the lovers in the worldQ
To all the lords of love and lifeR
-
-
-
Perhaps the passions of mankindS
Are but the torches mysticalT
Lit by some spirit hand to findS
The dwelling of the Master MindS
That knows the secret of it allJ
In the great darkness and the windS
-
We are the Candle Love the FlameU
Each little life light flickers outV
Love bides immortally the sameU
When of life's fever we shall tireF
He will desert us and the fireF
Rekindle new in prince or loutV
-
Twin born of knowledge and of lustW
He was before us he shall beM
Indifferent still of thee and meM
When shattered is life's golden cupX
When thy young limbs are shrivelled upX
And when my heart is turned to dustW
-
Nay sweet smile not to know at lastY
That thou and I or knave or foolZ
Are but the involitient toolZ
Of some world purpose vague and vastY
No bar to passion's fury setA2
With monstrous poppies spice the wineL
For only drunk are we divineL
And only mad shall we forgetA2
