True Friendship Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAAB CDCCD EFEEG HIHJI CKCCL MNMMN OMOOM PLPPK

Friendship thou balm for ev'ry illA
I must aspire to theeB
Whose breezes bid the heart be stillA
And render sweet the patient's pillA
And set the pris'ner freeB
-
Friendship it is the softest soulC
Which feels another's painD
And must with equal sighs condoleC
While sympathetic streamlets rollC
Which nothing can restrainD
-
Not to be nominated smartE
Of mortals to be seenF
She does not thus her gifts impartE
Her aid is from a feeling heartE
A principle withinG
-
When the lone stranger forced to roamH
Comes shiv'ring to her doorI
At once he finds a welcome homeH
The torch of grace dispels his gloomJ
And bids him grope no moreI
-
Friendship was never known to failC
The voice of need to hearK
When ruthless ills our peace assailC
When from our hearts she draws the veilC
And drys the falling tearL
-
When dogs and devils snarl and fightM
She hides and dwells aloneN
When friends and kindred disuniteM
With pity she surveys the rightM
And gives to each his ownN
-
Friendship has not a sister graceO
Her wonders to exceedM
She is the queen of all her raceO
Whose charms the stoutest must embraceO
When in the vale of needM
-
Friendship is but the feeling sighP
The sympathizing tearL
Constrain'd to flow till others dryP
Nor lets the needy soul pass byP
Nor scorns to see or hearK
