Thou may'st with pleasure hail the dawnA
And greet the morning's eyeB
Remember king the night comes onC
The fleeting day will soon be goneA
Not distant loud proclaims the funeral toneD
Phillip thou hast to dieB
-
With thee thy dame the queen of birdsE
May spread her wing to flyB
Or smile to trace the numerous herdsE
Thunders from the Lord of lordsF
I hear some peal surpassing human wordsE
Philip thou hast to dieB
-
Thou mayst thy mighty host surveyG
And neighboring kings defyB
Whilst round thy retinues flit gayG
Beneath thy pomp's imperial rayG
Make merry on the tide of joy to dayG
To morrow thou shalt dieB
-
I heave to hear the day's last pealH
A sorrow teeming sighB
The morning's flutt'ring bird has flownD
The roses fade so quickly blownD
The lofty king falls robeless from his throneD
Philip was born to dieB
-
'Twas thus the haughty king of FranceI
Strove to ascend on highB
Lifting his adamantine lanceI
He bade his dauntless war horse pranceI
Defied the world and rode the car of chanceI
To rage to fume and dieB
-
Thus vile thus obstinately vainJ
He pours his distant bragK
Regardless of his millions slainJ
Regales his pale surviving trainJ
Was but wraped in his infernal chainJ
Dies on the ocean cragK
-
This faithful lesson read to allL
Creation far and nighB
It is the fate from Adam's fallL
The swain the king the low and tallL
The watchman of the grave must give the callL
Mortal thou hast to dieB
