The Swan - Vain Pleasures Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL

The Swan which boasted mid the tideA
Whose nest was guarded by the waveB
Floated for pleasure till she diedA
And sunk beneath the flood to laveB
-
The bird of fashion drops her wingC
The rose bush now declines to bloomD
The gentle breezes of the springC
No longer waft a sweet perfumeD
-
Fair beauty with those lovely eyesE
Withers along her vital streamF
Proud fortune leaves her throne and fliesE
From pleasure as a flattering dreamF
-
The eagle of exalted fameG
Which spreads his pinions far to sailH
Struggled to fan his dying flameG
Till pleasure pall'd in every galeH
-
And gaudy mammon sordid gainI
Whose plume has faded once so gayJ
Languishes mid her flowery trainI
Whilst pleasure flies like fumes awayJ
-
Vain pleasures O how short to lastK
Like leaves which quick to ashes burnL
Which kindle from the slightest blastK
And slight to nothing hence returnL
