Sad Moscow thy fate do I seeA
Fire fire in the city all cryB
Like quails from the eagle all fleeA
Escape in a moment or dieB
-
It looks like the battle of TroyC
The storm rises higher and higherD
The scene of destruction all hearts must annoyC
The whirlwinds the smoke and the fireD
-
The dread conflagration rolls forthE
Augmenting the rage of the windF
Which blows it from south unto northE
And leaves but the embers behindF
-
It looks like Gomorrah the flameG
Is moving still nigher and nigherD
Aloud from all quarters the people proclaimG
The whirlwinds the smoke and the fireD
-
A dead fumigation now swellsH
A blue circle darkens the airD
With tones as the pealing of bellsH
Farewell to the brave and the fairD
-
O Moscow thou city of graceI
Consign'd to a dread burning pyreD
From morning to ev'ning with sorrow I traceI
The wild winds the smoke and the fireD
-
The dogs in the kennel all howlJ
The wether takes flight with the oxK
Appal'd on the wing is the fowlJ
The pigeon deserting her boxK
-
With a heart full of pain in the nightL
Mid hillocks and bogs I retireD
Through lone deadly vallies I steer by its lightL
The wild storm the smoke and the fireD
-
Though far the crash breaks on my earD
The stars glimmer dull in the skyB
The shrieks of the women I hearD
The fall of the kingdom is nighB
-
heaven when earth is no moreD
And all things in nature expireD
May I thus with safety keep distant beforeD
The whirlwinds the smoke and the fireD
