The Fearful Traveller In The Haunted Castle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Oft do I hear those windows opeA
And shut with dread surpriseB
And spirits murmur as they gropeA
But break not on the eyesB
-
Still fancy spies the winding sheetC
The phantom and the shroudD
And bids the pulse of horror beatC
Throughout my ears aloudD
-
Some unknown finger thumps the doorE
From one of faltering voiceF
Till some one seems to walk the floorE
With an alarming noiseG
-
The drum of horror holds her soundH
Which will not let me sleepA
When ghastly breezes float aroundH
And hidden goblins creepA
-
Methinks I hear some constant groanI
The din of all the deadJ
While trembling thus I lie aloneI
Upon this restless bedJ
-
At length the blaze of morning brokeK
On my impatient viewL
And truth or fancy told the jokeK
And bade the night adieuL
-
'Twas but the noise of prowling ratsM
Which ran with all their speedN
Pursued in haste by hungry catsM
Which on the vermin feedN
-
Those creatures crumbling off the cheeseO
Which on the table layP
Some cats too quick the rogues to seizeO
With rumbling lost their preyP
-
Thus man is often his own elfQ
Who makes the night his ghostR
And shrinks with horror from himselfQ
Which is to fear the mostR
-
The cat growl'd as she held her preyP
Which shriek'd with all its mightS
And drove she balm of sleep awayP
Throughout the live long nightS
