When Tiger left his native yardA
He did not many ills regardA
A fleet and harmless curB
Indeed he was a trusty dogC
And did not through the pastures progC
The grazing flocks to stir poor dogC
The grazing flocks to stirB
-
He through a field by chance was ledD
In quest of game not far aheadD
And made one active leapE
When all at once alarm'd he spiedF
A creature welt'ring on its sideF
A deadly wounded sheep alasG
A deadly wounded sheepE
-
He there was fill'd with sudden fearH
Apprized of lurking danger nearH
And there he left his trailI
Indeed he was afraid to yelpJ
Nor could he grant the creature helpJ
But wheel'd and drop'd his tail poor dogC
But wheel'd and drop'd his tailI
-
It was his pass time pride and funK
At morn the nimble hare to runK
When frost was on the grassG
Returning home who should he meetL
The weather's owner coming fleetL
Who scorn'd to let him pass alasG
Who scorn'd to let him passG
-
Tiger could but his bristles raiseM
A surly compliment he paysM
Insulted shows his wrathN
Returns a just defensive growlO
And does not turn aside to prowlO
But onward keeps the path poor dogC
But onward keeps the pathN
-
The raging owner found the bruteP
But could afford it no recruitP
Nor raise it up to standQ
'Twas mangled by some other dogsR
A set of detrimental roguesS
Raised up at no command alasG
Raised up at no commandQ
-
Sagacious Tiger left his bogsR
But bore the blame of other dogsR
With powder fire and ballT
They kill'd the poor unlawful gameU
And then came back and eat the sameU
But Tiger paid for all poor dogC
But Tiger paid for allT
-
Let ev'ry harmless dog bewareV
Lest he be taken in the snareV
And scorn such fields to roamW
A creature may be fraught with graceX
And suffer for the vile and baseX
By straggling off from home alasG
By straggling off from homeW
-
The blood of creatures oft is spiltY
Who die without a shade of guiltY
Look out or cease to roamW
Whilst up and down the world he playsM
For pleasure man in danger straysM
Without a friend from home alasG
Without a friend from homeW
