As smoke from a volcano soars in the airA
The soul of man discontent mounts from a sighB
Exhaled as to heaven in mystical prayerA
Invoking that love which forbids him to dieB
-
Sweet hope lovely passion my grief ever chaseC
And scatter the gloom which veils pleasure's bright rayD
O lend me thy wings and assist me to traceC
The flight of my fair one when gone far awayD
-
When the dim star of pleasure sets glimmering aloneE
The planet of beauty on life's dreary shoreF
And th' fair bird of fancy forever is flownE
On pinions of haste to be heard of no moreF
-
Hope tell me dear passion thou wilt not forgetG
To flourish still sweetly and blossom as gayD
Expelling like morning the gloom of regretG
When the lark of affection is gone far awayD
-
If hurried into some unchangeable climeH
Where oceans of pleasure continually rollI
Far far from the limited borders of timeH
With a total division of body and soulI
-
Hope tell me dear passion which must earth surviveJ
That love will be sweeter when nature is o'erK
And still without pain though eternity liveJ
In the triumph of pleasure when time is no moreF
-
O love when the day light of pleasure shall closeL
Let the vesper of death break on life's dusky evenM
Let the faint sun of time set in peace as it roseN
And eternity open thy morning in heavenO
-
Then hope lovely passion thy torch shall expireP
Effusing on nature life's last feeble rayD
While the night maid of love sets her taper on fireK
To guard smiling beauty from time far awayD
