ON ACCOUNT OF THE IMAGINARY FLIGHT OF HER SUITORA
-
-
Oh heartless dove mount in the skiesB
Spread thy soft wing upon the galeC
Or on thy sacred pinions riseB
Nor brood with silence in the valeC
-
-
Breathe on the air thy plaintive noteD
Which oft has filled the lonesome groveE
And Iet thy melting ditty floatD
The dirge of long lamented loveF
-
-
Coo softly to the silent earG
And make the floods of grief to rollH
And cause by love the sleeping tearI
To wake with sorrow from the soulH
-
-
Is it the loss of pleasures pastJ
Which makes thee droop thy sounding wingK
Does winter's rough inclement blastJ
Forbid thy tragic voice to singK
-
-
Is it because the Fragrant breezeL
Along the sky forbears to flowM
Nor whispers low amidst the treesL
Whilst all the vallies frown belowM
-
-
Why should a frown thy soul alarmN
And tear thy pleasures from thy breastO
Or veil the smiles of every charmN
And rob thee of thy peaceful restO
-
-
Perhaps thy sleeping love may wakeP
And hear thy penitential toneQ
And suffer not thy heart to breakP
Nor let a princess grieve aloneQ
-
-
Perhaps his pity may returnR
With equal feeling from the heartS
And breast with breast together burnR
Never no never more to partS
-
-
Never till death's resistless blowM
Whose call the dearest must obeyT
In twain together then may goM
And thus together dwell for ayeU
-
-
Say to the suitor Come awayT
Nor break the knot which love has tiedV
Nor to the world thy trust betrayT
And fly forever from thy brideV
