When Evening bids the Sun to rest retireA
Unwearied Ether sets her lamps on fireB
Lit by one torch each is supplied in turnC
Till all the candles in the concave burnC
-
-
The night hawk now with his nocturnal toneD
Wakes up and all the Owls begin to moanD
Or heave from dreary vales their dismal songE
Whilst in the air the meteors play alongE
-
-
illegible ength the silver queen begins to riseF
illegible spread her glowing mantle in the skiesF
illegible from the smiling chambers of the eastG
illegible the eye to her resplendent feastG
-
-
What joy is this unto the rustic swainH
Who from the mount surveys the moon lit plainH
Who with the spirit of a dauntles PanI
Controls his fleecy train and leads the vanI
-
-
Or pensive muses on the water's sideJ
Which purling doth thro' green meanders glideJ
With watchful care he broods his heart awayK
'Till might is swallowed in the flood of dayK
-
-
The meteors cease to play that mov'd so fleetL
And spectres from the murky groves retreatL
The prowling wolf withdraws which bowl'd so boldM
And bleating flocks may venture from the foldM
-
-
The night hawk's din deserts the shepherd's earN
Succeeded by the huntsman's trumpet clearO
O come Diana start the morning chaseP
Thou ancient goddess of the hunting raceP
-
-
Aurora's smiles adorn the mountain's browQ
The peasant hums delighted at his plowQ
And lo the dairy maid salutes her bounteous cowQ
