Let me die and not tremble at deathA
But smile at the close of my dayB
And then at the flight of my breathA
Like a bird of the morning in MayB
Go chanting awayB
-
Let me die without fear of the deadC
No horrors my soul shall dismayB
And with faith's pillow under my headC
With defiance to mortal decayB
Go chanting awayB
-
Let me die like a son of the braveD
And martial distinction displayB
Nor shrink from a thought of the graveD
No but with a smile from the clayB
Go chanting awayB
-
Let me die glad regardless of painE
No pang to this world to betrayB
And the spirit cut loose from its chainE
So loath in the flesh to delayB
Go chanting awayB
-
Let me die and my worst foe forgiveF
When death veils the last vital rayB
Since I have but a moment to liveG
Let me when the last debt I payB
Go chanting awayB
