Why should my anxious breast repineA
Because my youth is fledB
Days of delight may still be mineA
Affection is not deadB
In tracing back the years of youthC
One firm record one lasting truthC
Celestial consolation bringsD
Bear it ye breezes to the seatE
Where first my heart responsive beatE
Friendship is Love without his wingsD
-
Through few but deeply chequer'd yearsF
What moments have been mineA
Now half obscured by clouds of tearsG
Now bright in rays divineA
Howe'er my future doom be castH
My soul enraptured with the pastH
To one idea fondly clingsD
Friendship that thought is all thine ownA
Worth worlds of bliss that thought aloneA
Friendship is Love without his wingsD
-
Where yonder yew trees lightly waveI
Their branches on the galeJ
Unheeded heaves a simple graveI
Which tells the common taleJ
Round this unconscious schoolboys strayK
Till the dull knell of childish playK
From yonder studious mansion ringsD
But here whene'er my footsteps moveL
My silent tears too plainly proveL
Friendship is Love without his wingsD
-
Oh Love before thy glowing shrineA
My early vows were paidM
My hopes my dreams my heart was thineA
But these are now decay'dM
For thine are pinions like the windN
No trace of thee remains behindN
Except alas thy jealous stingsD
Away away delusive powerO
Thou shall not haunt my coming hourO
Unless indeed without thy wingsD
-
Seat of my youth thy distant spireP
Recalls each scene of joyQ
My bosom glows with former fireO
In mind again a boyQ
Thy grove of elms thy verdant hillR
Thy every path delights me stillR
Each flower a double fragrance flingsD
Again as once in converse gayK
Each dear associate seems to sayK
Friendship is Love without his wings '-
-
My Lycus wherefore dost thou weepS
Thy falling tears restrainA
Affection for a time may sleepS
But oh 'twill wake againA
Think think my friend when next we meetE
Our long wished interview how sweetE
From this my hope of rapture springsD
While youthful hearts thus fondly swellT
Absence my friend can only tellT
Friendship is Love without his wingsD
-
In one and one alone deceiv'dU
Did I my error mournA
No from oppressive bonds reliev'dU
I left the wretch to scornA
I turn'd to those my childhood knewA
With feelings warm with bosoms trueA
Twin'd with my heart's according stringsD
And till those vital chords shall breakV
For none but these my breast shall wakeV
Friendship the power deprived of wingsD
-
Ye few my soul my life is yoursW
My memory and my hopeX
Your worth a lasting love insuresW
Unfetter'd in its scopeX
From smooth deceit and terror sprungY
With aspect fair and honey'd tongueY
Let Adulation wait on kingsD
With joy elate by snares besetZ
We we my friends can ne'er forgetZ
Friendship is Love without his wingsD
-
Fictions and dreams inspire the bardA2
Who rolls the epic songB2
Friendship and truth be my rewardC2
To me no bays belongB2
If laurell'd Fame but dwells with liesD2
Me the enchantress ever fliesD2
Whose heart and not whose fancy singsD
Simple and young I dare not feignA
Mine be the rude yet heartfelt strainA
Friendship is Love without his wingsD
