-
Well thou art happy and I feelB
That I should thus be happy tooC
For still my heart regards thy wealB
Warmly as it was wont to doC
-
-
-
-
Thy husband's blest and 'twill impartD
Some pangs to view his happier lotE
But let them pass Oh how my heartD
Would hate him if he loved thee notE
-
-
-
-
When late I saw thy favourite childF
I thought my jealous heart would breakG
But when the unconscious infant smil'dF
I kiss'd it for its mother's sakeG
-
-
-
-
I kiss'd it and repress'd my sighsH
Its father in its face to seeI
But then it had its mother's eyesH
And they were all to love and meI
-
-
-
-
Mary adieu I must awayJ
While thou art blest I'll not repineK
But near thee I can never stayJ
My heart would soon again be thineK
-
-
-
-
I deem'd that Time I deem'd that PrideL
Had quench'd at length my boyish flameM
Nor knew till seated by thy sideL
My heart in all save hope the sameM
-
-
-
-
Yet was I calm I knew the timeN
My breast would thrill before thy lookO
But now to tremble were a crimeN
We met and not a nerve was shookO
-
-
-
-
I saw thee gaze upon my faceP
Yet meet with no confusion thereQ
One only feeling couldst thou traceP
The sullen calmness of despairQ
-
-
-
-
Away away my early dreamR
Remembrance never must awakeG
Oh where is Lethe's fabled streamR
My foolish heart be still or breakG
