Rhyme Scheme: ABACDEDE BFBFGFGH IJIJKLK MNMNOPOP FQFQRSRS TUTUVAV

The King was on his throneA
The Satraps throng'd the hallB
A thousand bright lamps shoneA
O'er that high festivalC
A thousand cups of goldD
In Judah deem'd divineE
Jehovah's vessels holdD
The godless Heathen's wineE
-
In that same hour and hallB
The fingers of a handF
Came forth against the wallB
And wrote as if on sandF
The fingers of a manG
A solitary handF
Along the letters ranG
And traced them like a wandH
-
The monarch saw and shookI
And bade no more rejoiceJ
All bloodless wax'd his lookI
And tremulous his voiceJ
'Let the men of lore appearK
The wisest of the earthL
And expound the words of fearK
Which mar our royal mirth '-
-
Chaldea's seers are goodM
But here they have no skillN
And the unknown letters stoodM
Untold and awful stillN
And Babel's men of ageO
Are wise and deep in loreP
But now they were not sageO
They saw but knew no moreP
-
A captive in the landF
A stranger and a youthQ
He heard the king's commandF
He saw that writing's truthQ
The lamps around were brightR
The prophecy in viewS
He read it on that nightR
The morrow proved it trueS
-
'Belshazzar's grave is madeT
His kingdom pass'd awayU
He in the balance weigh'dT
Is light and worthless clayU
The shroud his robe of stateV
His canopy the stoneA
The Mede is at his gateV
The Persian on his throne '-
