Ah Love was never yet withoutA
The pang the agony the doubtA
Which rends my heart with ceaseless sighB
While day and night roll darkling byB
-
Without one friend to hear my woeC
I faint I die beneath the blowC
That Love had arrows well I knewD
Alas I find them poison'd tooD
-
Birds yet in freedom shun the netE
Which Love around your haunts hath setE
Or circled by his fatal fireF
Your hearts shall burn your hopes expireG
-
A bird of free and careless wingH
Was I through many a smiling springH
But caught within the subtle snareI
I burn and feebly flutter thereI
-
Who ne'er have loved and loved in vainJ
Can neither feel nor pity painJ
The cold repulse the look askanceK
The lightning of Love's angry glanceK
-
In flattering dreams I deem'd thee mineL
Now hope and he who hoped decline'L
Like melting wax or withering flowerF
I feel my passion and thy powerF
-
My light of life ah tell me whyB
That pouting lip and alter'd eyeB
My bird of love my beauteous mateM
And art thou changed and canst thou hateM
-
Mine eyes like wintry streams o'erflowC
What wretch with me would barter woeC
My bird relent one note could giveN
A charm to bid thy lover liveO
-
My curdling blood my madd'ning brainL
In silent anguish I sustainL
And still thy heart without partakingH
One pang exults while mine is breakingH
-
Pour me the poison fear not thouP
Thou canst not murder more than nowP
I've lived to curse my natal dayQ
And Love that thus can lingering slayQ
-
My wounded soul my bleeding breastR
Can patience preach thee into restR
Alas too late I dearly knowC
That joy is harbinger of woeC
