To Mary, On Receiving Her Picture. [1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

A
-
This faint resemblance of thy charmsB
Though strong as mortal art could giveC
My constant heart of fear disarmsB
Revives my hopes and bids me liveD
-
-
-
-
Here I can trace the locks of goldE
Which round thy snowy forehead waveF
The cheeks which sprung from Beauty's mouldE
The lips which made me 'Beauty's' slaveF
-
-
-
-
Here I can trace ah no that eyeG
Whose azure floats in liquid fireH
Must all the painter's art defyG
And bid him from the task retireI
-
-
-
-
Here I behold its beauteous hueJ
But where's the beam so sweetly strayingK
Which gave a lustre to its blueJ
Like Luna o'er the ocean playingK
-
-
-
-
Sweet copy far more dear to meL
Lifeless unfeeling as thou artM
Than all the living forms could beL
Save her who plac'd thee next my heartM
-
-
-
-
She plac'd it sad with needless fearN
Lest time might shake my wavering soulO
Unconscious that her image thereP
Held every sense in fast controulO
-
-
-
-
Thro' hours thro' years thro' time 'twill cheerN
My hope in gloomy moments raiseB
In life's last conflict 'twill appearN
And meet my fond expiring gazeB
