To George, Earl Delwarr Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD AEAE FGFG BHBH CICJ KLKL LMLM ANAN

Oh yes I will own we were dear to each otherA
The friendships of childhood though fleeting are trueB
The love which you felt was the love of a brotherA
Nor less the affection I cherish'd for youB
-
But Friendship can vary her gentle dominionC
The attachment of years in a moment expiresD
Like Love too she moves on a swift waving pinionC
But glows not like Love with unquenchable firesD
-
Full oft have we wander'd through Ida togetherA
And blest were the scenes of our youth I allowE
In the spring of our life how serene is the weatherA
But winter's rude tempests are gathering nowE
-
No more with affection shall memory blendingF
The wonted delights of our childhood retraceG
When pride steels the bosom the heart is unbendingF
And what would be Justice appears a disgraceG
-
However dear George for I still must esteem youB
The few whom I love I can never upbraidH
The chance which has lost may in future redeem youB
Repentance will cancel the vow you have madeH
-
I will not complain and though chill'd is affectionC
With me no corroding resentment shall liveI
My bosom is calm'd by the simple reflectionC
That both may be wrong and that both should forgiveJ
-
You knew that my soul that my heart my existenceK
If danger demanded were wholly your ownL
You knew me unalter'd by years or by distanceK
Devoted to love and to friendship aloneL
-
You knew but away with the vain retropectionL
The bond of affection no longer enduresM
Too late you may droop o'er the fond recollectionL
And sigh for the friend who was formerly yoursM
-
For the present we part I will hope not for everA
For time and regret will restore you at lastN
To forget our dimension we both should endeavourA
I ask no atonement but days like the pastN
