-
Oh yes I will own we were dear to each otherB
The friendships of childhood though fleeting are trueC
The love which you felt was the love of a brotherB
Nor less the affection I cherish'd for youC
-
-
-
-
But Friendship can vary her gentle dominionD
The attachment of years in a moment expiresE
Like Love too she moves on a swift waving pinionD
But glows not like Love with unquenchable firesE
-
-
-
-
Full oft have we wander'd through Ida togetherB
And blest were the scenes of our youth I allowF
In the spring of our life how serene is the weatherB
But Winter's rude tempests are gathering nowF
-

-
-
No more with Affection shall Memory blendingG
The wonted delights of our childhood retraceH
When Pride steels the bosom the heart is unbendingG
And what would be Justice appears a disgraceH
-
-
-
-
However dear George for I still must esteem youC
The few whom I love I can never upbraidI
The chance which has lost may in future redeem youC
Repentance will cancel the vow you have madeI
-
-
-
-
I will not complain and though chill'd is affectionD
With me no corroding resentment shall liveJ
My bosom is calm'd by the simple reflectionD
That both may be wrong and that both should forgiveK
-
-
-
-
You knew that my soul that my heart my existenceL
If danger demanded were wholly your ownM
You knew me unalter'd by years or by distanceL
Devoted to love and to friendship aloneM
-
-
-
-
You knew but away with the vain retrospectionM
The bond of affection no longer enduresN
Too late you may droop o'er the fond recollectionM
And sigh for the friend who was formerly yoursN
-
-
-
-
For the present we part I will hope not for everB
For time and regret will restore you at lastO
To forget our dissension we both should endeavourB
I ask no atonement but days like the pastO
