Oh Lady when I left the shoreA
The distant shore which gave me birthB
I hardly thought to grieve once moreA
To quit another spot on earthB
-
Yet here amidst this barren isleC
Where panting Nature droops the headD
Where only thou art seen to smileC
I view my parting hour with dreadD
-
Though far from Albin's craggy shoreA
Divided by the dark blue mainE
A few brief rolling seasons o'erF
Perchance I view her cliffs againG
-
But wheresoe'er I now may roamH
Through scorching clime and varied seaI
Though Time restore me to my homeH
I ne'er shall bend mine eyes on theeI
-
On thee in whom at once conspireF
All charms which heedless hearts can moveJ
Whom but to see is to admireK
And oh forgive the word to loveL
-
Forgive the word in one who ne'erM
With such a word can more offendN
And since thy heart I cannot shareM
Believe me what I am thy friendN
-
And who so cold as look on theeI
Thou lovely wand'rer and be lessO
Nor be what man should ever beI
The friend of Beauty in distressO
-
Ah who would think that form had pastP
Through Danger's most destructive pathQ
Had braved the death wing'd tempest's blastP
And 'scaped a tyrant's fiercer wrathQ
-
Lady when I shall view the wallsR
Where free Byzantium once aroseS
And Stamboul's Oriental hallsR
The Turkish tyrants now encloseS
-
Though mightiest in the lists of fameT
That glorious city still shall beI
On me 'twill hold a dearer claimT
As spot of thy nativityI
-
And though I bid thee now farewellU
When I behold that wondrous sceneV
Since where thou art I may not dwellU
'Twill soothe to be where thou hast beenW
-
SeptemberF
