-
Ah heedless girl why thus discloseB
What ne'er was meant for other earsC
Why thus destroy thine own reposeB
And dig the source of future tearsD
-
-
-
-
Oh thou wilt weep imprudent maidE
While lurking envious foes will smileF
For all the follies thou hast saidG
Of those who spoke but to beguileF
-
-
-
-
Vain girl thy lingering woes are nighH
If thou believ'st what striplings sayI
Oh from the deep temptation flyH
Nor fall the specious spoiler's preyI
-
-
-
-
Dost thou repeat in childish boastJ
The words man utters to deceiveK
Thy peace thy hope thy all is lostL
If thou canst venture to believeK
-
-
-
-
While now amongst thy female peersC
Thou tell'st again the soothing taleM
Canst thou not mark the rising sneersC
Duplicity in vain would veilM
-
-
-
-
These tales in secret silence hushN
Nor make thyself the public gazeO
What modest maid without a blushN
Recounts a flattering coxcomb's praiseO
-
-
-
-
Will not the laughing boy despiseP
Her who relates each fond conceitQ
Who thinking Heaven is in her eyesP
Yet cannot see the slight deceitQ
-
-
-
-
For she who takes a soft delightR
These amorous nothings in revealingS
Must credit all we say or writeR
While vanity prevents concealingS
-
-
-
-
Cease if you prize your Beauty's reignT
No jealousy bids me reproveK
One who is thus from nature vainT
I pity but I cannot loveK
