The Moorish King rides up and downA
Through Granada's royal townA
From Elvira's gate to thoseB
Of Bivarambla on he goesB
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
Letters to the monarch tellD
How Alhama's city fellD
In the fire the scroll he threwE
And the messenger he slewE
Woe is me AlbamalE
-
He quits his mule and mounts his horseF
And through the street directs his courseF
Through the street of ZacatinA
To the Alhambra spurring inA
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
When the Alhambra walls he gain'dG
On the moment he ordain'dG
That the trumpet straight should soundH
With the silver clarion roundH
Woe is me AlhamalE
-
And when the hollow drums of warI
Beat the loud alarm afarJ
That the Moors of town and plainA
Might answer to the martial strainA
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
Then the Moors by this awareK
That bloody Mars recall'd them thereK
One by one and two by twoE
To a mighty squadron grewE
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
Out then spake an aged MoorL
In these words the king beforeI
'Wherefore call on us oh KingM
What may mean this gathering '-
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'Friends ye have alas to knowA
Of a most disastrous blowA
That the Christians stern and boldN
Have obtain'd Alhama's hold '-
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
Out then spake old AlfaquiM
With his beard so white to seeO
'Good King thou art justly servedP
Good King this thou hast deservedP
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'By thee were slain in evil hourQ
The Abencerrage Granada's flowerQ
And strangers were received by theeO
Of Cordova the ChivalryO
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'And for this oh King is sentR
On thee a double chastisementR
Thee and thine thy crown and realmC
One last wreck shall overwhelmC
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'He who holds no laws in aweS
He must perish by the lawE
And Granada must be wonA
And thyself with her undone '-
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
Fire crashed from out the old Moor's eyesT
The Monarch's wrath began to riseT
Because he answer'd and becauseU
He spake exceeding well of lawsU
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'There is no law to say such thingsV
As may disgust the ear of kingsV
'Thus snorting with his choler saidR
The Moorish King and doom'd him deadR
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
Moor Alfaqui Moor AlfaquiM
Though thy beard so hoary beO
The King hath sent to have thee seizedR
For Alhama's loss displeasedR
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
And to fix thy head uponA
High Alhambra's loftiest stoneA
That thus for thee should be the lawE
And others tremble when they sawE
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'Cavalier and man of worthW
Let these words of mine go forthX
Let the Moorish Monarch knowA
That to him I nothing oweA
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'But on my soul Alhama weighsY
And on my inmost spirit preysY
And if the King his land hath lostR
Yet others may have lost the mostR
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'Sires have lost their children wivesZ
Their lords and valiant men their livesA2
One what best his love might claimC
Hath lost another wealth or fameC
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
'I lost a damsel in that hourQ
Of all the land the loveliest flowerQ
Doubloons a hundred I would payB2
And think her ransom cheap that day '-
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
And as these things the old Moor saidR
They sever'd from the trunk his headR
And to the Alhambra's wall with speedR
'Twas carried as the King decreedR
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
And men and infants therein weepC2
Their loss so heavy and so deepC2
Granada's ladies all she rearsD2
Within her walls burst into tearsE2
Woe is me AlhamaC
-
And from the windows o'er the wallsF2
The sable web of mourning fallsF2
The King weeps as a woman o'erQ
His loss for it is much and soreI
Woe is me AlhamaC
