The Eve Of Waterloo Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABBCBCC DEDEEFEFF GHIHJCHCC KLKLLLLLL MNMFNONO

There was a sound of revelry by nightA
And Belgium's capital had gathered thenB
Her beauty and her chivalry and brightA
The lamps shone o'er fair women and brave menB
A thousand hearts beat happily and whenB
Music arose with its voluptuous swellC
Soft eyes looked love to eyes which spake againB
And all went merry as a marriage bellC
But hush hark a deep sound strikes like a rising knellC
-
-
Did ye not hear it No 'twas but the windD
Or the car rattling o'er the stony streetE
On with the dance let joy be unconfinedD
No sleep till morn when youth and pleasure meetE
To chase the glowing hours with flying feetE
But hark that heavy sound breaks in once moreF
As if the clouds its echo would repeatE
And nearer clearer deadlier than beforeF
Arm arm it is it is the cannon's opening roarF
-
-
Within a windowed niche of that high hallG
Sate Brunswick's fated chieftain he did hearH
That sound the first amidst the festivalI
And caught its tone with death's prophetic earH
And when they smiled because he deemed it nearJ
His heart more truly knew that peal too wellC
Which stretched his father on a bloody bierH
And roused the vengeance blood alone could quellC
He rushed into the field and foremost fighting fellC
-
-
Ah then and there was hurrying to and froK
And gathering tears and tremblings of distressL
And cheeks all pale which but an hour agoK
Blushed at the praise of their own lovelinessL
And there were sudden partings such as pressL
The life from out young hearts and choking sighsL
Which ne'er might be repeated who would guessL
If ever more should meet those mutual eyesL
Since upon night so sweet such awful morn could riseL
-
-
And there was mounting in hot haste the steedM
The mustering squadron and the clattering carN
Went pouring forward with impetuous speedM
And swiftly forming in the ranks of warF
And the deep thunder peal on peal afarN
And near the beat of the alarming drumO
Roused up the soldier ere the morning starN
While thronged the citizens with terror dumbO
Or whispering with white lips 'The foe they come they come '-
