'Tis fifty years and yet their frayB
To us might seem but yesterdayB
Tis fifty years and three to bootC
Since hand to hand and foot to footD
And heart to heart and sword to swordE
One of our Ancestors was goredE
I've seen the sword that slew him heF
The slain stood in a like degreeF
To thee as he the Slayer stoodG
Oh had it been but other bloodH
In kin and Chieftainship to meF
Thus came the Heritage to theeF
-

-
To me the Lands of him who slewI
Came through a line of yore renownedJ
For I can boast a race as trueI
To Monarchs crowned and some discrownedJ
As ever Britain's Annals knewI
For the first Conqueror gave us GroundJ
And the last Conquered owned the lineK
Which was my mother's and is mineK

I loved thee I will not say howL
Since things like these are best forgotJ
Perhaps thou may'st imagine nowL
Who loved thee and who loved thee notJ
And thou wert wedded to anotherM
And I at last another weddedJ
I am a father thou a motherM
To Strangers vowed with strangers beddedJ
For land to land even blood to bloodJ
Since leagued of yore our fathers wereM
Our manors and our birthright stoodJ
And not unequal had I wooedJ
If to have wooed thee I could dareN
But this I never dared even yetJ
When naught is left but to forgetJ
I feel that I could only loveO
To sue was never meant for meF
And least of all to sue to theeF
For many a bar and many a feudJ
Though never told well understoodJ
Rolled like a river wide betweenP
And then there was the Curse of bloodJ
Which even my Heart's can not removeQ
Alas how many things have beenR
Since we were friends for I aloneS
Feel more for thee than can be shownS
-

-
How many things I loved thee thouL
Loved'st me not another wasT
The Idol of thy virgin vowL
And I was what I am AlasU
And what he is and what thou artJ
And what we were is like the restJ
We must endure it as a testJ
And old Ordeal of the HeartJ
