A
-
No specious splendour of this stoneB
Endears it to my memory everC
With lustre only once it shoneB
And blushes modest as the giverC
-
-
-
-
Some who can sneer at friendship's tiesD
Have for my weakness oft reprov'd meE
Yet still the simple gift I prizeD
For I am sure the giver lov'd meE
-
-
-
-
He offer'd it with downcast lookF
As fearful that I might refuse itG
I told him when the gift I tookF
My only fear should be to lose itG
-
-
-
-
This pledge attentively I view'dH
And sparkling as I held it nearI
Methought one drop the stone bedew'dH
And ever since I've lov'd a tearJ
-
-
-
-
Still to adorn his humble youthK
Nor wealth nor birth their treasures yieldH
But he who seeks the flowers of truthK
Must quit the garden for the fieldH
-
-
-
-
'Tis not the plant uprear'd in slothL
Which beauty shews and sheds perfumeM
The flowers which yield the most of bothL
In Nature's wild luxuriance bloomM
-
-
-
-
Had Fortune aided Nature's careJ
For once forgetting to be blindH
His would have been an ample shareJ
If well proportioned to his mindH
-
-
-
-
But had the Goddess clearly seenN
His form had fix'd her fickle breastH
Her countless hoards would his have beenO
And none remain'd to give the restH
