Pignus Amoris. [1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

A
-
As by the fix'd decrees of HeavenB
'Tis vain to hope that Joy can lastC
The dearest boon that Life has givenB
To me is visions of the pastC
-
-
-
-
For these this toy of blushing hueD
I prize with zeal before unknownE
It tells me of a Friend I knewD
Who loved me for myself aloneE
-
-
-
-
It tells me what how few can sayF
Though all the social tie commendG
Recorded in my heart 'twill layF
It tells me mine was once a FriendG
-
-
-
-
Through many a weary day gone byH
With time the gift is dearer grownE
And still I view in Memory's eyeH
That teardrop sparkle through my ownE
-
-
-
-
And heartless Age perhaps will smileI
Or wonder whence those feelings sprungJ
Yet let not sterner souls revileI
For Both were open Both were youngJ
-
-
-
-
And Youth is sure the only timeK
When Pleasure blends no base alloyL
When Life is blest without a crimeK
And Innocence resides with JoyL
-
-
-
-
Let those reprove my feeble SoulM
Who laugh to scorn Affection's nameN
While these impose a harsh controulM
All will forgive who feel the sameN
-
-
-
-
Then still I wear my simple toyL
With pious care from wreck I'll save itO
And this will form a dear employL
For dear I was to him who gave itO
