A
-
How sweetly shines through azure skiesB
The lamp of Heaven on Lora's shoreC
Where Alva's hoary turrets riseB
And hear the din of arms no moreC
-
-
-
-
But often has yon rolling moonD
On Alva's casques of silver play'dE
And view'd at midnight's silent noonD
Her chiefs in gleaming mail array'dE
-
-
-
-
And on the crimson'd rocks beneathF
Which scowl o'er ocean's sullen flowG
Pale in the scatter'd ranks of deathH
She saw the gasping warrior lowG
-
-
-
-
While many an eye which ne'er againI
Could mark the rising orb of dayJ
Turn'd feebly from the gory plainK
Beheld in death her fading rayJ
-
-
-
-
Once to those eyes the lamp of LoveL
They blest her dear propitious lightM
But now she glimmer'd from aboveL
A sad funereal torch of nightM
-
-
-
-
Faded is Alva's noble raceN
And grey her towers are seen afarO
No more her heroes urge the chaseN
Or roll the crimson tide of warC
-
-
-
-
But who was last of Alva's clanP
Why grows the moss on Alva's stoneQ
Her towers resound no steps of manP
They echo to the gale aloneQ
-
-
-
-
And when that gale is fierce and highR
A sound is heard in yonder hallS
It rises hoarsely through the skyR
And vibrates o'er the mould'ring wallS
-
-
-
-
Yes when the eddying tempest sighsB
It shakes the shield of Oscar braveT
But there no more his banners riseB
No more his plumes of sable waveT
-
-
-
-
Fair shone the sun on Oscar's birthU
When Angus hail'd his eldest bornV
The vassals round their chieftain's hearthW
Crowd to applaud the happy mornV
-
-
-
-
They feast upon the mountain deerX
The Pibroch rais'd its piercing noteY
To gladden more their Highland cheerX
The strains in martial numbers floatY
-
-
-
-
And they who heard the war notes wildZ
Hop'd that one day the Pibroch's strainK
Should play before the Hero's childZ
While he should lead the Tartan trainK
-
-
-
-
Another year is quickly pastA2
And Angus hails another sonB2
His natal day is like the lastA2
Nor soon the jocund feast was doneB2
-
-
-
-
Taught by their sire to bend the bowC2
On Alva's dusky hills of windD2
The boys in childhood chas'd the roeG
And left their hounds in speed behindD2
-
-
-
-
But ere their years of youth are o'erE2
They mingle in the ranks of warC
They lightly wheel the bright claymoreC
And send the whistling arrow farO
-
-
-
-
Dark was the flow of Oscar's hairF2
Wildly it stream'd along the galeG2
But Allan's locks were bright and fairF2
And pensive seem'd his cheek and paleG2
-
-
-
-
But Oscar own'd a hero's soulH2
His dark eye shone through beams of truthI2
Allan had early learn'd controulH2
And smooth his words had been from youthI2
-
-
-
-
Both both were brave the Saxon spearX
Was shiver'd oft beneath their steelH2
And Oscar's bosom scorn'd to fearX
But Oscar's bosom knew to feelH2
-
-
-
-
While Allan's soul belied his formJ2
Unworthy with such charms to dwellH2
Keen as the lightning of the stormJ2
On foes his deadly vengeance fellH2
-
-
-
-
From high Southannon's distant towerE2
Arrived a young and noble dameK2
With Kenneth's lands to form her dowerL2
Glenalvon's blue eyed daughter cameK2
-
-
-
-
And Oscar claim'd the beauteous brideM2
And Angus on his Oscar smil'dZ
It soothed the father's feudal prideM2
Thus to obtain Glenalvon's childZ
-
-
-
-
Hark to the Pibroch's pleasing noteY
Hark to the swelling nuptial songN2
In joyous strains the voices floatY
And still the choral peal prolongN2
-
-
-
-
See how the Heroes' blood red plumesO2
Assembled wave in Alva's hallH2
Each youth his varied plaid assumesO2
Attending on their chieftain's callH2
-
-
-
-
It is not war their aid demandsP2
The Pibroch plays the song of peaceQ2
To Oscar's nuptials throng the bandsP2
Nor yet the sounds of pleasure ceaseQ2
-
-
-
-
But where is Oscar sure 'tis lateR2
Is this a bridegroom's ardent flameK2
While thronging guests and ladies waitR2
Nor Oscar nor his brother cameK2
-
-
-
-
At length young Allan join'd the brideM2
Why comes not Oscar Angus saidS2
Is he not here the Youth repliedM2
With me he rov'd not o'er the gladeE
-
-
-
-
Perchance forgetful of the dayJ
'Tis his to chase the bounding roeG
Or Ocean's waves prolong his stayJ
Yet Oscar's bark is seldom slowG
-
-
-
-
Oh no the anguish'd Sire rejoin'dT2
Nor chase nor wave my Boy delayJ
Would he to Mora seem unkindD2
Would aught to her impede his wayJ
-
-
-
-
Oh search ye Chiefs oh search aroundU2
Allan with these through Alva flyH2
Till Oscar till my son is foundU2
Haste haste nor dare attempt replyH2
-
-
-
-
All is confusion through the valeH2
The name of Oscar hoarsely ringsV2
It rises on the murm'ring galeH2
Till night expands her dusky wingsV2
-
-
-
-
It breaks the stillness of the nightM
But echoes through her shades in vainK
It sounds through morning's misty lightM
But Oscar comes not o'er the plainK
-
-
-
-
Three days three sleepless nights the ChiefW2
For Oscar search'd each mountain caveT
Then hope is lost in boundless griefW2
His locks in grey torn ringlets waveT
-
-
-
-
Oscar my son thou God of Heav'nK
Restore the prop of sinking ageX2
Or if that hope no more is givenK
Yield his assassin to my rageX2
-
-
-
-
Yes on some desert rocky shoreC
My Oscar's whiten'd bones must lieH2
Then grant thou God I ask no moreC
With him his frantic Sire may dieH2
-
-
-
-
Yet he may live away despairF2
Be calm my soul he yet may liveY2
T' arraign my fate my voice forbearF2
O God my impious prayer forgiveZ2
-
-
-
-
What if he live for me no moreF2
I sink forgotten in the dustA3
The hope of Alva's age is o'erF2
Alas can pangs like these be justA3
-
-
-
-
Thus did the hapless Parent mournK
Till Time who soothes severest woeG
Had bade serenity returnK
And made the tear drop cease to flowG
-
-
-
-
For still some latent hope surviv'dB3
That Oscar might once more appearF2
His hope now droop'd and now revivedB3
Till Time had told a tedious yearF2
-
-
-
-
Days roll'd along the orb of lightM
Again had run his destined raceN
No Oscar bless'd his father's sightM
And sorrow left a fainter traceN
-
-
-
-
For youthful Allan still remain'dC3
And now his father's only joyD3
And Mora's heart was quickly gain'dC3
For beauty crown'd the fair hair'd boyD3
-
-
-
-
She thought that Oscar low was laidE
And Allan's face was wondrous fairF2
If Oscar liv'd some other maidE
Had claim'd his faithless bosom's careF2
-
-
-
-
And Angus said if one year moreF2
In fruitless hope was pass'd awayJ
His fondest scruples should be o'erF2
And he would name their nuptial dayJ
-
-
-
-
Slow roll'd the moons but blest at lastA2
Arriv'd the dearly destin'd mornK
The year of anxious trembling pastA2
What smiles the lovers' cheeks adornK
-
-
-
-
Hark to the Pibroch's pleasing noteY
Hark to the swelling nuptial songN2
In joyous strains the voices floatY
And still the choral peal prolongN2
-
-
-
-
Again the clan in festive crowdE3
Throng through the gate of Alva's hallH2
The sounds of mirth re echo loudE3
And all their former joy recallH2
-
-
-
-
But who is he whose darken'd browF2
Glooms in the midst of general mirthU
Before his eyes' far fiercer glowG
The blue flames curdle o'er the hearthW
-
-
-
-
Dark is the robe which wraps his formJ2
And tall his plume of gory redS2
His voice is like the rising stormJ2
But light and trackless is his treadS2
-
-
-
-
'Tis noon of night the pledge goes roundU2
The bridegroom's health is deeply quaff'dU2
With shouts the vaulted roofs resoundU2
And all combine to hail the draughtU2
-
-
-
-
Sudden the stranger chief aroseF3
And all the clamorous crowd are hush'dU2
And Angus' cheek with wonder glowsF3
And Mora's tender bosom blush'dU2
-
-
-
-
Old man he cried this pledge is doneK
Thou saw'st 'twas truly drunk by meG3
It hail'd the nuptials of thy sonK
Now will I claim a pledge from theeG3
-
-
-
-
While all around is mirth and joyD3
To bless thy Allan's happy lotU2
Say hadst thou ne'er another boyD3
Say why should Oscar be forgotU2
-
-
-
-
Alas the hapless Sire repliedU2
The big tear starting as he spokeH3
When Oscar left my hall or diedU2
This aged heart was almost brokeH3
-
-
-
-
Thrice has the earth revolv'd her courseI3
Since Oscar's form has bless'd my sightU2
And Allan is my last resourceI3
Since martial Oscar's death or flightU2
-
-
-
-
'Tis well replied the stranger sternK
And fiercely flash'd his rolling eyeH2
Thy Oscar's fate I fain would learnK
Perhaps the Hero did not dieH2
-
-
-
-
Perchance if those whom most he lov'dU2
Would call thy Oscar might returnK
Perchance the chief has only rov'dU2
For him thy Beltane yet may burnK
-
-
-
-
Fill high the bowl the table roundU2
We will not claim the pledge by stealthJ3
With wine let every cup be crown'dU2
Pledge me departed Oscar's healthJ3
-
-
-
-
With all my soul old Angus saidU2
And fill'd his goblet to the brimK3
Here's to my boy alive or deadU2
I ne'er shall find a son like himK3
-
-
-
-
Bravely old man this health has spedU2
But why does Allan trembling standU2
Come drink remembrance of the deadU2
And raise thy cup with firmer handU2
-
-
-
-
The crimson glow of Allan's faceN
Was turn'd at once to ghastly hueL3
The drops of death each other chaceN
Adown in agonizing dewL3
-
-
-
-
Thrice did he raise the goblet highH2
And thrice his lips refused to tasteU2
For thrice he caught the stranger's eyeH2
On his with deadly fury plac'dU2
-
-
-
-
And is it thus a brother hailsM3
A brother's fond remembrance hereF2
If thus affection's strength prevailsM3
What might we not expect from fearF2
-
-
-
-
Roused by the sneer he rais'd the bowlH2
Would Oscar now could share our mirthU
Internal fear appall'd his soulH2
He said and dash'd the cup to earthU
-
-
-
-
'Tis he I hear my murderer's voiceN3
Loud shrieks a darkly gleaming FormJ2
A murderer's voice the roof repliesB
And deeply swells the bursting stormJ2
-
-
-
-
The tapers wink the chieftains shrinkO3
The stranger's gone amidst the crewL3
A Form was seen in tartan greenK
And tall the shade terrific grewL3
-
-
-
-
His waist was bound with a broad belt roundU2
His plume of sable stream'd on highH2
But his breast was bare with the red wounds thereF2
And fix'd was the glare of his glassy eyeH2
-
-
-
-
And thrice he smil'd with his eye so wildU2
On Angus bending low the kneeG3
And thrice he frown'd on a Chief on the groundU2
Whom shivering crowds with horror seeG3
-
-
-
-
The bolts loud roll from pole to poleH2
And thunders through the welkin ringP3
And the gleaming form through the mist of the stormJ2
Was borne on high by the whirlwind's wingP3
-
-
-
-
Cold was the feast the revel ceas'dU2
Who lies upon the stony floorF2
Oblivion press'd old Angus' breastU2
At length his life pulse throbs once moreF2
-
-
-
-
Away away let the leech essayJ
To pour the light on Allan's eyesB
His sand is done his race is runK
Oh never more shall Allan riseB
-
-
-
-
But Oscar's breast is cold as clayJ
His locks are lifted by the galeH2
And Allan's barb d arrow layJ
With him in dark Glentanar's valeH2
-
-
-
-
And whence the dreadful stranger cameK2
Or who no mortal wight can tellH2
But no one doubts the form of flameK2
For Alva's sons knew Oscar wellH2
-
-
-
-
Ambition nerv'd young Allan's handU2
Exulting demons wing'd his dartU2
While Envy wav'd her burning brandU2
And pour'd her venom round his heartU2
-
-
-
-
Swift is the shaft from Allan's bowF2
Whose streaming life blood stains his sideU2
Dark Oscar's sable crest is lowG
The dart has drunk his vital tideU2
-
-
-
-
And Mora's eye could Allan moveQ3
She bade his wounded pride rebelH2
Alas that eyes which beam'd with loveL
Should urge the soul to deeds of HellH2
-
-
-
-
Lo see'st thou not a lonely tombR3
Which rises o'er a warrior deadU2
It glimmers through the twilight gloomR3
Oh that is Allan's nuptial bedU2
-
-
-
-
Far distant far the noble graveT
Which held his clan's great ashes stoodU2
And o'er his corse no banners waveT
For they were stain'd with kindred bloodU2
-
-
-
-
What minstrel grey what hoary bardU2
Shall Allan's deeds on harp strings raiseS3
The song is glory's chief rewardU2
But who can strike a murd'rer's praiseS3
-
-
-
-
Unstrung untouch'd the harp must standU2
No minstrel dare the theme awakeT3
Guilt would benumb his palsied handU2
His harp in shuddering chords would breakT3
-
-
-
-
No lyre of fame no hallow'd verseU3
Shall sound his glories high in airF2
A dying father's bitter curseU3
A brother's death groan echoes thereF2
