Hush'd are the winds and still the evening gloom | B |
Not e'en a zephyr wanders through the grove | C |
Whilst I return to view my Margaret's tomb | B |
And scatter flowers on the dust I love | D |
- | |
Within this narrow cell reclines her clay | E |
That clay where once such animation beam'd | F |
The King of Terrors seized her as his prey | E |
Not worth nor beauty have her life redeem'd | F |
- | |
Oh could that King of Terrors pity feel | G |
Or heaven reverse the dread decree of fate | H |
Not here the mourner would his grief reveal | G |
Not here the muse her virtues would relate | H |
- | |
But wherefore weep Her matchless spirit soars | I |
Beyond where splendid shines the orb of day | E |
And weeping angels lead her to those bowers | J |
Where endless pleasures virtuous deeds repay | E |
- | |
- | |
And shall presumptuous mortals Heaven arraign | K |
And madly godlike Providence accuse | L |
Ah no far fly from me attempts so vain | K |
I'll ne'er submission to my God refuse | L |
- | |
- | |
Yet is remembrance of those virtues dear | M |
Yet fresh the memory of that beauteous face | N |
Still they call forth my warm affection's tear | O |
Still in my heart retain their wonted place | N |
