On The Death Of A Young Lady Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: A BCBD EFEF GHGH IEJE KLKL MNON

Cousin to the Author and very dear to himA
-
Hush'd are the winds and still the evening gloomB
Not e'en a zephyr wanders through the groveC
Whilst I return to view my Margaret's tombB
And scatter flowers on the dust I loveD
-
Within this narrow cell reclines her clayE
That clay where once such animation beam'dF
The King of Terrors seized her as his preyE
Not worth nor beauty have her life redeem'dF
-
Oh could that King of Terrors pity feelG
Or heaven reverse the dread decree of fateH
Not here the mourner would his grief revealG
Not here the muse her virtues would relateH
-
But wherefore weep Her matchless spirit soarsI
Beyond where splendid shines the orb of dayE
And weeping angels lead her to those bowersJ
Where endless pleasures virtuous deeds repayE
-
-
And shall presumptuous mortals Heaven arraignK
And madly godlike Providence accuseL
Ah no far fly from me attempts so vainK
I'll ne'er submission to my God refuseL
-
-
Yet is remembrance of those virtues dearM
Yet fresh the memory of that beauteous faceN
Still they call forth my warm affection's tearO
Still in my heart retain their wonted placeN
