In one who felt as once he feltB
This might perhaps have fann'd the flameC
But now his heart no more will meltB
Because that heart is not the sameC

As when the ebbing flames are lowD
The aid which once improved their lightE
And bade them burn with fiercer glowD
Now quenches all their blaze in nightE

Thus has it been with Passion's firesF
As many a boy and girl remembersF
While every hope of love expiresF
Extinguish'd with the dying embersF

The first though not a spark surviveG
Some careful hand may teach to burnH
The last alas can ne'er surviveG
No touch can bid its warmth returnH

Or if it chance to wake againI
Not always doom'd its heat to smotherJ
It sheds so wayward fates ordainK
Its former warmth around anotherJ
