When the moon is on the waveA
And the glow worm in the grassB
And the meteor on the graveA
And the wisp on the morassB
When the falling stars are shootingC
And the answer'd owls are hootingC
And the silent leaves are stillD
In the shadow of the hillD
Shall my soul be upon thineE
With a power and with a signE
-
Though thy slumber may be deepF
Yet thy spirit shall not sleepF
There are shades which will not vanishG
There are thoughts thou canst not banishG
By a power to thee unknownH
Thou canst never be aloneH
Thou art wrapt as with a shroudI
Thou art gather'd in a cloudI
And for ever shalt thou dwellJ
In the spirit of this spellJ
-
Though thou seest me not pass byK
Thou shalt feel me with thine eyeK
As a thing that though unseenL
Must be near thee and hath beenM
And when in that secret dreadN
Thou hast turn'd around thy headN
Thou shalt marvel I am notO
As thy shadow on the spotO
And the power which thou dost feelP
Shall be what thou must concealP
-
And a magic voice and verseQ
Hath baptiz'd thee with a curseQ
And a spirit of the airR
Hath begirt thee with a snareR
In the wind there is a voiceS
Shall forbid thee to rejoiceS
And to thee shall night denyK
All the quiet of her skyK
And the day shall have a sunT
Which shall make thee wish it doneT
-
From thy false tears I did distilD
An essence which hath strength to killD
From thy own heart I then did wringC
The black blood in its blackest springC
From thy own smile I snatch'd the snakeC
For there it coil'd as in a brakeC
From thy own lip I drew the charmU
Which gave all these their chiefest harmU
In proving every poison knownH
I found the strongest was thine ownH
-
By thy cold breast and serpent smileV
By thy unfathom'd gulfs of guileV
By that most seeming virtuous eyeK
By thy shut soul's hypocrisyW
By the perfection of thine artX
Which pass'd for human thine own heartX
By thy delight in others' painY
And by thy brotherhood of CainY
I call upon thee and compelJ
Thyself to be thy proper HellJ
-
And on thy head I pour the vialZ
Which doth devote thee to this trialZ
Nor to slumber nor to dieK
Shall be in thy destinyW
Though thy death shall still seem nearA2
To thy wish but as a fearA2
Lo the spell now works around theeW
And the clankless chain hath bound theeW
O'er thy heart and brain togetherB2
Hath the word been pass'd now witherB2
