In The Valley Of The Waters We Wept O'er The Day Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCDEEFFAAGGHHIIJJ KKLMNN

When some proud son of man returns to earthA
Unknown to glory but upheld by birthA
The sculptor's art exhausts the pomp of woeB
And storied urns record who rest belowB
When all is done upon the tomb is seenC
Not what he was but what he should have beenD
But the poor dog in life the firmest friendE
The first to welcome foremost to defendE
Whose honest heart is still his master's ownF
Who labours fights lives breathes for him aloneF
Unhonour'd falls unnoticed all his worthA
Denied in heaven the soul he held on earthA
While man vain insect hopes to be forgivenG
And claims himself a sole exclusive heavenG
Oh man thou feeble tenant of an hourH
Debased by slavery or corrupt by powerH
Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgustI
Degraded mass of animated dustI
Thy love is lust thy friendship all a cheatJ
Thy smiles hypocrisy thy words deceitJ
By nature vile ennobled but by nameK
Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shameK
Ye who perchance behold this simple urnL
Pass on it honours none you wish to mournM
To mark a friend's remains these stones ariseN
I never knew but one and here he liesN
