My dear Mr MurrayA
You're in a damn 'd hurryA
To set up this ultimate CantoB
But if they don't rob usC
You'll see Mr HobhouseC
Will bring it safe in his portmanteauB
-
For the Journal you hint ofD
As ready to print offE
No doubt you do right to commend itB
But as yet I have writ offE
The devil a bit ofD
Our 'Beppo ' when copied I'll send itB
-
Then you've Sotheby's TourF
No great things to be sureF
You could hardly begin with a less workG
For the pompous rascallionH
Who don't speak ItalianH
Nor French must have scribbled by guess workG
-
You can make any loss upI
With 'Spence' and his gossipI
A work which must surely succeedB
Then Queen Mary's Epistle craftB
With the new 'Fytte' of 'Whistlecraft '-
Must make people purchase and readB
-
Then you've General GordonH
Who girded his sword onH
To serve with a Muscovite masterJ
And help him to polishK
A nation so owlishK
They thought shaving their beards a disasterJ
-
For the man 'poor and shrewd '-
With whom you'd concludeB
A compact without more delayL
Perhaps some such pen isC
Still extant in VeniceC
But please sir to mention your payL
-
Venice JanuaryA
