It is the voice of years that are gone they roll before me with all their deedsA

-
NEWSTEAD fast falling once resplendent domeC
Religion's shrine repentant HENRY'S prideD
Of Warriors Monks and Dames the cloister'd tombE
Whose pensive shades around thy ruins glideD
-
-
-
-
Hail to thy pile more honour'd in thy fallF
Than modern mansions in their pillar'd stateG
Proudly majestic frowns thy vaulted hallF
Scowling defiance on the blasts of fateG
-
-
-
-
No mail clad Serfs obedient to their LordH
In grim array the crimson cross demandI
Or gay assemble round the festive boardH
Their chief's retainers an immortal bandI
-
-
-
-
Else might inspiring Fancy's magic eyeJ
Retrace their progress through the lapse of timeK
Marking each ardent youth ordain'd to dieJ
A votive pilgrim in Judea's climeK
-
-
-
-
But not from thee dark pile departs the ChiefL
His feudal realm in other regions layM
In thee the wounded conscience courts reliefL
Retiring from the garish blaze of dayM
-
-
-
-
Yes in thy gloomy cells and shades profoundN
The monk abjur'd a world he ne'er could viewO
Or blood stain'd Guilt repenting solace foundN
Or Innocence from stern Oppression flewO
-
-
-
-
A Monarch bade thee from that wild ariseP
Where Sherwood's outlaws once were wont to prowlQ
And Superstition's crimes of various dyesP
Sought shelter in the Priest's protecting cowlQ
-
-
-
-
Where now the grass exhales a murky dewO
The humid pall of life extinguish'd clayM
In sainted fame the sacred Fathers grewO
Nor raised their pious voices but to prayM
-
-
-
-
Where now the bats their wavering wings extendR
Soon as the gloaming spreads her waning shadeS
The choir did oft their mingling vespers blendR
Or matin orisons to Mary paidS
-
-
-
-
Years roll on years to ages ages yieldT
Abbots to Abbots in a line succeedU
Religion's charter their protecting shieldT
Till royal sacrilege their doom decreedU
-
-
-
-
One holy HENRY rear'd the Gothic wallsV
And bade the pious inmates rest in peaceW
Another HENRY the kind gift recallsV
And bids devotion's hallow'd echoes ceaseW
-
-
-
-
Vain is each threat or supplicating prayerX
He drives them exiles from their blest abodeY
To roam a dreary world in deep despairX
No friend no home no refuge but their GodZ
-
-
-
-
Hark how the hall resounding to the strainB
Shakes with the martial music's novel dinB
The heralds of a warrior's haughty reignB
High crested banners wave thy walls withinB
-
-
-
-
Of changing sentinels the distant humK
The mirth of feasts the clang of burnish'd armsA2
The braying trumpet and the hoarser drumK
Unite in concert with increas'd alarmsA2
-
-
-
-
An abbey once a regal fortress nowB
Encircled by insulting rebel powersB2
War's dread machines o'erhang thy threat'ning browB
And dart destruction in sulphureous showersB2
-
-
-
-
Ah vain defence the hostile traitor's siegeC2
Though oft repuls'd by guile o'ercomes the braveD2
His thronging foes oppress the faithful LiegeC2
Rebellion's reeking standards o'er him waveD2
-
-
-
-
Not unaveng'd the raging Baron yieldsE2
The blood of traitors smears the purple plainB
Unconquer'd still his falchion there he wieldsE2
And days of glory yet for him remainB
-
-
-
-
Still in that hour the warrior wish'd to strewO
Self gather'd laurels on a self sought graveD2
But Charles' protecting genius hither flewO
The monarch's friend the monarch's hope to saveD2
-
-
-
-
Trembling she snatch'd him from th' unequal strifeF2
In other fields the torrent to repelG2
For nobler combats here reserv'd his lifeF2
To lead the band where godlike FALKLAND fellG2
-
-
-
-
From thee poor pile to lawless plunder givenB
While dying groans their painful requiem soundN
Far different incense now ascends to HeavenB
Such victims wallow on the gory groundN
-
-
-
-
There many a pale and ruthless Robber's corseH2
Noisome and ghast defiles thy sacred sodZ
O'er mingling man and horse commix'd with horseH2
Corruption's heap the savage spoilers trodZ
-
-
-
-
Graves long with rank and sighing weeds o'erspreadZ
Ransack'd resign perforce their mortal mouldZ
From ruffian fangs escape not e'en the deadZ
Racked from repose in search for buried goldZ
-
-
-
-
Hush'd is the harp unstrung the warlike lyreI2
The minstrel's palsied hand reclines in deathJ2
No more he strikes the quivering chords with fireK2
Or sings the glories of the martial wreathL2
-
-
-
-
At length the sated murderers gorged with preyM
Retire the clamour of the fight is o'erK2
Silence again resumes her awful swayM
And sable Horror guards the massy doorM2
-
-
-
-
Here Desolation holds her dreary courtZ
What satellites declare her dismal reignB
Shrieking their dirge ill omen'd birds resortZ
To flit their vigils in the hoary faneB
-
-
-
-
Soon a new Morn's restoring beams dispelG2
The clouds of Anarchy from Britain's skiesP
The fierce Usurper seeks his native hellG2
And Nature triumphs as the Tyrant diesP
-
-
-
-
With storms she welcomes his expiring groansN2
Whirlwinds responsive greet his labouring breathJ2
Earth shudders as her caves receive his bonesN2
Loathing the offering of so dark a deathJ2
-
-
-
-
The legal Ruler now resumes the helmK
He guides through gentle seas the prow of stateZ
Hope cheers with wonted smiles the peaceful realmK
And heals the bleeding wounds of wearied HateZ
-
-
-
-
The gloomy tenants Newstead of thy cellsO2
Howling resign their violated nestZ
Again the Master on his tenure dwellsO2
Enjoy'd from absence with enraptured zestZ
-
-
-
-
Vassals within thy hospitable paleP2
Loudly carousing bless their Lord's returnB
Culture again adorns the gladdening valeP2
And matrons once lamenting cease to mournB
-
-
-
-
A thousand songs on tuneful echo floatZ
Unwonted foliage mantles o'er the treesQ2
And hark the horns proclaim a mellow noteZ
The hunters' cry hangs lengthening on the breezeQ2
-
-
-
-
Beneath their coursers' hoofs the valleys shakeR2
What fears what anxious hopes attend the chaseS2
The dying stag seeks refuge in the lakeR2
Exulting shouts announce the finish'd raceS2
-
-
-
-
Ah happy days too happy to endureT2
Such simple sports our plain forefathers knewO
No splendid vices glitter'd to allureT2
Their joys were many as their cares were fewO
-
-
-
-
From these descending Sons to Sires succeedZ
Time steals along and Death uprears his dartZ
Another Chief impels the foaming steedZ
Another Crowd pursue the panting hartZ
-
-
-
-
Newstead what saddening change of scene is thineB
Thy yawning arch betokens slow decayM
The last and youngest of a noble lineB
Now holds thy mouldering turrets in his swayM
-
-
-
-
Deserted now he scans thy gray worn towersB2
Thy vaults where dead of feudal ages sleepU2
Thy cloisters pervious to the wintry showersB2
These these he views and views them but to weepU2
-
-
-
-
Yet are his tears no emblem of regretZ
Cherish'd Affection only bids them flowV2
Pride Hope and Love forbid him to forgetZ
But warm his bosom with impassion'd glowV2
-
-
-
-
Yet he prefers thee to the gilded domesW2
Or gewgaw grottos of the vainly greatZ
Yet lingers 'mid thy damp and mossy tombsX2
Nor breathes a murmur 'gainst the will of FateZ
-
-
-
-
Haply thy sun emerging yet may shineB
Thee to irradiate with meridian rayM
Hours splendid as the past may still be thineB
And bless thy future as thy former dayM
